They strongly reject suggestions that they were involved in improper commercial arrangements with the club. The Abu Dhabi-based airline reacted angrily to the publication of an independent commission’s findings into City’s 115 charges, which the Premier League published this week. The commission found that Manchester City artificially inflated revenue by around £900 million through sponsorship arrangements. The findings allege that some deals were part of a disguised funding scheme involving the club’s owners. The Premier League said the commission concluded that City had arranged sham commercial deals with several sponsors and had deliberately sought to circumvent its rules. However, Etihad rejected any notion that the airline was involved in wrongdoing. In a statement to The Times , the airline also complained that the Premier League never contacted or engaged with it during the investigation. “Etihad categorically rejects any finding, conclusion or implication that suggests the airline has ever been involved in improper commercial arrangements,” the company said. Etihad added that it was never allowed to provide information, respond to allegations or ensure the accuracy of material that could now damage its reputation. The airline also criticised how the findings were communicated publicly. They insist selective leaks and reporting created damaging implications, even though the redacted commission decision did not name Etihad. Etihad has been Manchester City’s principal sponsor since 2009, while the club’s stadium has carried the airline’s name since 2011. Despite the dispute, Etihad said its relationship with City remains strong and that it continues to support the club and its supporters. The airline is now seeking legal advice over its options. “Etihad will seek the relevant legal counsel on the options and recourse available to protect its interests,” the statement concluded. Man City are set to appeal the verdict and have maintained their innocence. Meanwhile, United Kingdom Prime Minister Andy Burnham admitted he would be really concerned if the Emirati owners of Manchester City decided to sell the club .
