Arsenal blunder: Liverpool can steal Gunners star in Premier League bombshell

Arsenal blunder: Liverpool can steal Gunners star in Premier League bombshell Arsenal are making a serious blunder. It's one that could see a star end up at Liverpool - just as they always planned. Liverpool are in the market for a midfielder. They have to be, really, as they've struggled to control games in the middle of the pitch. Though, we were saying this back in May. It felt inconceivable that Liverpool would pass through the summer transfer window without signing a new player in the middle, but that they did. In fact, they actually sold Curtis Jones and chose not to replace him. Madness. But we fully expect them to head in a different direction in 2027. They've been heavily linked with Lamine Camara for one, while it does appear that Alexis Mac Allister could depart the club. We think there's another possible option, though, and he's currently playing at Arsenal. Finally, Martin Zubimendi Rewind to 2024 and Liverpool’s top target for Martin Zubimendi. He was actually their only target - failure to land the player resulted in no major signings and the Reds simply moved on. Zubimendi would then join Arsenal in 2025 and played an important role in delivering the Premier League title. The key part there is ‘an important role’ - because the Gunners themselves don’t appear to realise that. The Spaniard has essentially been replaced by Bruno Guimaraes, who joined from Newcastle United this summer. Zubimendi has played just 89 minutes across Arsenal’s opening five matches as a result, a quite shocking figure. Now Spanish outlet Nacional reports that Chelsea are interested. They also claim that Real Madrid are interested . The real point is that Zubimendi is suddenly sitting on an unclear future and appears to be available for the right price. Liverpool should listen. This is a player they were interested in before and should still want because it’s flown completely under the radar that he was actually very, very important to Arsenal last season. Our Value Adder model has Zubimendi down as the second most valuable midfielder in the Premier League last season. The reason that’s perhaps gone unnoticed is that Declan Rice was the most valuable. But Zubimendi is there as the fourth most valuable across Europe’s top five leagues. He places the same purely on defensive value, too, while he’s 11th on possession value. Importantly, this is playing the same style as he was playing back in 2023/24 when Liverpool wanted him. Zubimendi has kept that up for years now, even if his value increased in a better team (as expected). Arsenal thrived defensively last season, with Rice and Zubimendi plugging the midfield and stopping teams from getting at their defence. Yes, that sacrificed creativity and it’s why the Gunners relied so heavily on set-pieces and breakaways. Mikel Arteta has decided to move away from that reliance this season but swapping out Zubimendi for Guimaraes. The result is being much more open, as seen with Brighton hammering them. We’ll see if their attack can make up for the loss in solidity - and whether their defence can handle the increased workload. Essentially, Arsenal have decided that boasting the two best defensive midfielders in the league is overkill. Now, we do think they’re wrong - their attack isn’t good enough to increase it’s efforts to make up for the defensive shortfall. But Liverpool’s is good enough. What they lack is any defensive midfielder at all and Zubimendi would be that. He’s offer the kind of control they need and this is undoubtedly a squad that can cope with just one sitting player. If Arsenal are foolish enough to give him up, Liverpool should be all over it.
