Barcelona vs Real Madrid new signings: Analysing how the two clubs’ summer arrivals have performed

Barcelona vs Real Madrid new signings: Analysing how the two clubs’ summer arrivals have performed Barcelona and Real Madrid entered the summer transfer window with similar intentions: strengthen their squads in key areas and add players capable of making an immediate impact. Both clubs eventually completed six senior signings, but the early returns have been markedly different.  After eight games, Barcelona remain unbeaten with eight wins and 36 goals, while several of Hansi Flick’s new arrivals have already established themselves as important pieces of the team. Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid have also seen encouraging performances from some of their recruits, particularly Ibrahima Konate and Carlos Espi, but the contribution across the six signings has been less consistent. To put it in perspective, Barcelona spent around €165 million on their six arrivals, while Real Madrid’s six new players cost around €225 million, with two of Mourinho’s signings arriving as free agents. The numbers provide an interesting starting point for comparing the two transfer windows. Barcelona’s attack received immediate boost Barcelona’s attacking additions have made an obvious impact, even though their roles have been different. Anthony Gordon has arguably been the most productive arrival, as the English winger has played 424 minutes across seven matches and, despite not scoring, has already registered five assists.  Anthony Gordon has been fantastic for Barcelona. (Photo by Francisco Macia/Getty Images) Karim Adeyemi has offered a different threat . The German has played 305 LaLiga minutes across seven appearances, starting three times, and has scored twice while providing two assists.  His overall tally stands at three goals and two assists, with Flick often using him as an attacking option from the bench. Gabriel Jesus, meanwhile, arrived towards the end of the window as a low-cost alternative.  He has featured four times, including three La Liga appearances and one Champions League outing, although his role remains considerably smaller than Gordon’s or Adeyemi’s. Real Madrid’s most expensive attacking addition has not produced comparable numbers so far. Yan Diomande arrived from RB Leipzig for €125 million, making him the most expensive signing of the summer.  He has appeared in all eight matches but has accumulated only 292 minutes, starting just twice.  The winger has one assist, but is yet to score or even earn an undisputed starting role. At the other end of the spectrum, Carlos Espi has been remarkably efficient.  The €25 million signing from Levante has played only 36 minutes across five appearances, yet he has already scored twice.  Barcelona’s midfield additions offer greater control The biggest difference between the two clubs arguably comes in midfield. He has played 439 minutes across seven matches, without a goal or assist, but those statistics do little to explain his role. His value has been concentrated in possession, distribution and helping Barcelona build attacks from deeper areas.  Rather than judging his contribution through goals, his influence is visible in the way Barcelona control matches. Goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic has had a far smaller role. With Joan Garcia established as the first-choice goalkeeper, Livaković has made just one La Liga appearance, playing 90 minutes against Sevilla.  On the other hand, Real Madrid’s midfield addition, Bernardo Silva, has had a more difficult start. The Portuguese midfielder arrived on a free transfer after leaving Manchester City and has played 282 minutes across six matches, starting three.  He has one assist but no goals and has gradually lost the regular starting position he initially occupied. Real Madrid have the stronger defense If Real Madrid have an area where their summer recruitment has clearly delivered, it is defence. Ibrahima Konate has immediately become one of Mourinho’s most trusted players.  The French centre-back has started seven of eight matches, accumulating 630 minutes and missing only the game against Malaga. His importance is reflected not only by his minutes but by the fact that Mourinho has consistently selected him. Cucurella is perhaps Real Madrid’s biggest win. (Photo by Florencia Tan Jun/Getty Images) Furthermore, Marc Cucurella has also played a significant role. Signed from Chelsea for €55 million, the left-back has featured in all eight matches and accumulated roughly 520 minutes, starting five times.  He has yet to score or assist but has become part of the rotation. Denzel Dumfries, meanwhile, has started six of his seven appearances after arriving from Inter for €20 million. He has played around 505 minutes, although he is still waiting for his first goal or assist. Barcelona’s defensive additions have had a different trajectory, with Joao Cancelo combining a useful attacking contribution with competition for his position. The Portuguese full-back has played 296 minutes across seven matches, scoring once and providing two assists.  He has started three times, with his last two La Liga appearances coming after Xavi Espart had initially occupied the position. His two spectacular long-range efforts have also added another attacking dimension. Early comparison favours Barcelona’s overall impact After eight games, the contrast between the two transfer windows is becoming clearer. Barcelona have received immediate production from Gordon and Adeyemi, greater control through Rodri and useful attacking numbers from Cancelo.  Gabriel Jesus and Livaković have played smaller roles, but the main contributors have already fitted into a team that has won every match. Real Madrid have found their most reliable new signing in Konate, while Cucurella and Dumfries have also become regular contributors.  Espi has produced an extraordinary return in limited minutes, but Diomande and Bernardo Silva have yet to establish themselves as consistent starters despite their significant price tags or reputations. Lastly, the financial comparison also adds weight. Real Madrid’s €225 million investment is considerably higher than Barcelona’s €165 million, yet the early statistical output and involvement of Barcelona’s arrivals have been more evenly distributed.
