'Best midfielder in the world': Liverpool star told he's as good as Zidane
'Best midfielder in the world': Liverpool star told he's as good as Zidane Liverpool have not had an overly easy time of it, results-wise, at the start of the 2026/27 season. Andoni Iraola has presided over only two victories in his opening five Premier League games - against newly promoted Ipswich Town as well as former club Bournemouth. It is going to take a while for the Basque tactico’s ideas to come across but there’s no doubt we’ve seen promising signs already. Alexander Isak for example is back among the goals on a more regular basis while improvements have been made to the backline too. Szoboszlai in tremendous form Liverpool are possessed of world-class talent in the midfield meanwhile - and it’s only a matter of time before the Anfield side start firing on all cylinders. The club offered new contracts to both Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai over the past few months. Szoboszlai, 25, has hit the ground running for club AND country this season - hitting an unbelievable goal in the EFL Cup victory over Tottenham. Szoboszlai likened to Zidane The Hungarian captain has carried on that fine form during the international window - excelling in the weekend win against Giorgi Mamardashvili’s Georgia where Milos Kerkez scored the only goal of the game. Szoboszlai’s performance was so good in the heart of midfield that Georgian coach Giorgi Tsetsadze - in charge of top-flight side Rustavi - told Hungarian media that the Liverpool man reminded him of a certain Zinedine Zidane on the night. Szoboszlai: 'One of the best in the world' “Looking at Dominik Szoboszlai , I thought of Zinédine Zidane – and not because of his hair…” he tells Nemzeti Sport. “Seriously, his performance was almost perfect both in attack and defense. “He was constantly looking for opportunities to pass forward, he was rushing towards the goal, trying to score, and what is especially important, he not only played forward in the middle of the field, but also gave dangerous passes in the final third. “I think he is one of the best midfielders in the world at the moment.” Zidane is one of a select band of players to win the UEFA Champions League, the FIFA World Cup as well as the Ballon d’Or and goes down as one of the all-time greats of the game. Iraola will be hoping to tap into those Zizou-like traits on a more regular basis once Szoboszlai returns from international duty.
