Barcelona continue to follow Dutch defensive talent after failed summer approach

Barcelona continue to follow Dutch defensive talent after failed summer approach Barcelona might not appear as aggressive on the transfer market as some of their European rivals, but one area the club are keen on reinforcing is central defence. The Catalans were unable to strengthen at the back during the summer, instead placing their faith in their existing options. But one name firmly on their radar for the future is FC Twente’s Ruud Nijstad. Barcelona continue to track Nijstad Nijstad is an emerging talent in the Netherlands. (Photo courtesy: X/fctwente) According to Fabrizio Romano , Barcelona are closely following Nijstad, an 18-year-old defender regarded as one of the finest young centre-back talents in Europe. The interest is nothing new either. Barcelona held contacts for the Dutchman back in August, but a deal proved impossible as Twente firmly closed the door on his exit, keen to keep him as a key figure in their side. Romano stresses that Barcelona’s attention remains very concrete, with the club intent on keeping tabs on the teenager going forward. Nijstad himself recently addressed the speculation , insisting he is happy at Twente for now, but his talent means his situation is likely to be revisited in future windows. For a club that prides itself on recruiting high-ceiling young players, Nijstad fits the profile perfectly. Why Barcelona need a centre-back Flick’s options in central defence are running thin. (Photo by Daniela Porcelli/Getty Images) The pursuit of Nijstad is particularly significant given Barcelona’s pressing need for defensive reinforcements. The club have been searching for a left-footed centre-back for some time, having been linked with the likes of Alessandro Bastoni and Nico Schlotterbeck in the summer. Andreas Christensen, who had enjoyed a strong start to the season, has picked up yet another injury, further exposing Barcelona’s lack of depth in central defence. With Ronald Araujo having left on loan and Pau Cubarsi carrying a heavy workload, Hansi Flick’s options at the back are stretched thin. Nijstad, as a promising left-sided defender, would address that long-standing requirement, though any move appears unlikely before next summer given Twente’s firm stance. For now, Barcelona will simply continue to monitor the youngster, aware that landing a talent of his calibre could prove a shrewd long-term investment in an area of genuine need.
