Aston Villa Eye €100m Star As Tottenham Hotspur Join Race: Should Emery Walk Away? Aston Villa could face a difficult transfer decision after Tottenham Hotspur reportedly joined the race for Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni. Roberto De Zerbi wants another attacking addition despite Spurs spending more than £300 million on 10 players during the summer window. Aston Villa face competition for Gianluca Prestianni According to GiveMeSport , Tottenham are monitoring Prestianni as they continue rebuilding their squad under De Zerbi. The Argentine winger has attracted attention through his performances in Portugal, with his attacking quality making him an attractive option for Premier League clubs. However, Villa have their own reasons for considering the 20-year-old. Unai Emery needs greater attacking consistency, particularly as his side currently sit 16th in the Premier League table. Prestianni could offer creativity, movement and another threat in wide areas. The reported competition from Tottenham presents another problem. Spurs have already committed substantial funds to their summer recruitment, including a landmark deal for Sandro Tonali, whose package reached £100 million with add-ons. Mateus Fernandes, Savio, Jan Paul van Hecke and Tosin Adarabioyo were among their other arrivals. Additionally, Tottenham have a future obligation to purchase loan signing Omar Marmoush permanently next summer. Their spending commitments make another expensive acquisition a significant decision, although De Zerbi’s interest suggests that Spurs still want attacking reinforcements. Benfica hold a strong negotiating position. Prestianni reportedly has a €100 million release clause, and the Portuguese club are preparing a new contract to protect their investment. Consequently, any January approach could demand substantial financial commitment from interested clubs. Villa would therefore need to consider whether the Argentine deserves such a major investment, especially with other positions requiring attention. Should Aston Villa pursue Prestianni in January? LISBON, PORTUGAL – NOVEMBER 5: Gianluca Prestianni of SL Benfica runs with the ball during the UEFA Champions League 2025/26 League Phase MD4 match between SL Benfica and Bayer 04 Leverkusen at Estadio da Luz on November 5, 2025 in Lisbon, Portugal. (Photo by Carlos Rodrigues/Getty Images) My view is that Emery should avoid a bidding war for Prestianni, particularly if Benfica demand anything close to €100 million. There is little doubt about the winger’s potential. Five goals and three assists across seven league starts represent impressive attacking production, especially for someone still developing his game. However, Villa’s immediate problems require more attention than another expensive forward. Sitting at 16th, Emery needs to improve defensive organisation, midfield control and consistency before committing a club-record fee to a young attacker. Villa already strengthened their wide options during the summer, so another major investment in that department might leave other weaknesses unresolved. Tottenham’s spending gives them a different financial position, but Villa shouldn’t compete simply because a Premier League rival wants the same player. Such an auction would strengthen Benfica’s negotiating hand considerably. Prestianni deserves continued attention, and Villa can maintain contact with his representatives without making an immediate offer. If his performances remain consistent, Emery can reassess the situation later. For now, Aston Villa should prioritise results and squad balance. Spending €100 million on potential while sitting 16th would represent a considerable gamble, and Emery has more pressing work to complete.
