USA vs Mexico player ratings: Who starred and struggled for USMNT, El Tri?

The United States men's national team and Mexico delivered goals, fouls, fights, and even a red card as CONCACAF football returned to the radar for two heated rivals tangling Saturday in a Glendale, Arizona-based friendly. A pair of errors from Mexico goalkeeper Raul Rangel helped a pair of American teenagers score goals, and another one led Malik Tillman to the score sheet. MORE — Recap, video highlights, more | Sullivan scores stunner Rafa Marquez will not want to watch this match again, especially since one of his halftime substitutes was sent off with more than 20 minutes to play. All of those players will factor in the player ratings as we dole out marks out of 10 for El Tri and their hosts. If the Mexico ratings look high, their first 20-25 minutes are hard to recall at the moment but were quite strong. Mexico player ratings at USMNT Raul Rangel: 3 — So clumsy in losing Reyna's driven cross on Hall's opening goal, then compounded the error by giving a gorgeous chance to Sullivan. There are your goals. Jesus Gallardo (Off HT) : 5.5 — Rafa Marquez went to a back three and wasn't about to take off Reyes, so Gallardo's day ended with a poor mark: 1-of-7 duels. Johan Vasquez: 6.5 — Wasn't given much help on his side. Diego Campillo: 6 — Sullied a decent performance by turning Fidalgo's error into the third USMNT goal. Israel Reyes ( Off 67') : 6.5 — Was so busy along with Campillo. Orbelin Pineda: 7.5 — Pineda and Sullivan found joy on each other's side during the first half. Pineda claimed most of his duels. His mazy dribble on the left flank to win a free kick early in the second half was something to see. Luis Romo (Off HT) : 6.5 — A yellow card shortened his day but Romo was a menace in the U.S. third. Maybe a bit too much energy, committing four fouls. Erik Lira: 6.5 — Certainly not the reason things went so poorly. Roberto Alvarado: 5.5 — A quieter day for one of Mexico's World Cup standouts. Santiago Sandoval ( Off 67') : 6 — Drew two fouls and tidy with the ball but struggled to get on it. Santiago Gimenez ( Off 72') : 5 — What might've been for Mexico if he buried his first-half chance. Subs Mateo Chavez (On HT, red card 67') : 3 — Played all of 22 minutes before seeing red. Luis Chavez (On HT) : 6.5 — The best of the second-half subs. Isaias Violante (On 67'): 6 Alvaro Fidalgo (On 67') : 5 — Awful back pass turned into third USMNT goal. Armando Gonzalez (On 72') : 6 Obed Vargas (On 82') : N/A Everardo Lopez (On 82') : N/A USMNT player ratings vs Mexico Diego Kochen: 7 — Didn't have to do anything spectacular early but showed aggression and decisiveness. Best moment might've been racing out to thwart an early through ball into the U.S. box. A spectacular save in the second half. Antonee Robinson: 7 — Typically decent going forward, he had a very good defensive day for the Yanks. Auston Trusty: 7 Chris Richards: 7 Alex Freeman: 7 — A very good and unorthodox pass to Reyna set up the first goal. Led all American players in touches. Tyler Adams: 7 — Pretty good way to kick off a new campaign as USMNT captain. Sebastian Berhalter (Off 82') : —: 7 — Probably could've been sent off for a foul about 10 minutes after getting a yellow while drawing Mateo Chavez's red card. His fire, like Reyna's — no surprise given their lineage — was perfect for the evening. Malik Tillman: 8 — Understood the assignment (Perhaps a bit too well, as Andy Edwards pointed out that his passes were a bit loose in the first half). Fierce energy and a relentless motor up and down the pitch. Great press late to turn more Mexican errors into fodder for the scoreboard. Giovanni Reyna (Off 82') : — Just three assists in three starts for a player who hasn't started three games in eight days for club or country in ages. Cavan Sullivan (Off 65') : 8 — There is a lot to like in this 17 year old, who is now the youngest goal scorer in USMNT history. He buzzes around the pitch like a player of his age without giving away the plot (that's he's 17). The composure to bury a 40-yard striker over the erring keeper is a bonus. Julian Hall (Off 65') : 7.5 — Hard to dislike three goals in three games as a teenager. Shout out to Michael Bradley for trusting the forward with loads of reps at RBNY. Subs Justin Ellis (On 65') : 6 — Did lots of good work to get to the doorstep of 4-0, then passed the ball to Rangel. Yunus Musah (On 65') : 6 Brooklyn Raines (On 82') : N/A Peyton Miller (On 82') : N/A Mathis Albert (On 88'): N/A
