Pape Gueye describes situation of former club Marseille as ‘sad’
Pape Gueye describes situation of former club Marseille as ‘sad’ Pape Gueye (27) has described the situation at his former club, Olympique de Marseille, as “sad”. The Villarreal midfielder returned to the Vélodrome on Sunday. Gueye featured in Senegal’s 1-0 win over the Comoros in a friendly. That match took place at the Vélodrome, a place that Gueye had previously called home. Having come through the ranks in France, the midfielder made the move to OM in 2020. He spent four years at the club before making the move to Villarreal on a free transfer back in 2024. Across his stint with Les Phocéens, he made 115 appearances. His former club have fallen on harder times. Financially hamstrung, the club were forced to sell their most bankable assets over the summer and were prevented from registering a single recruit. That hard summer has had its impact on the pitch. Heading into the international break, Marseille were second bottom in Ligue 1 and had lost five of their first six games in all competitions. Gueye spoke about the situation at his former club. “It’s sad. I am still passionate (about OM), and I watch all of their matches. I still have friends that play there. As a supporter, it is a bit difficult,” said the Senegal international in his post-match mixed zone interview. GFFN | Luke Entwistle
