Serie A Club Are Ready To Sell This Aston Villa Target: Should Emery Make The Move? Napoli appear ready to cash in on Scott McTominay, with Aston Villa among the clubs linked with the Scotland international. TuttoMercatoWeb reports that Napoli could sell the midfielder in 2027 rather than risk losing him for nothing later. His contract runs until June 2028, leaving Napoli with one year remaining on his deal. That timing matters. McTominay turns 30 on December 8, 2026, while his camp reportedly wants around €8 million per year for a new contract. Napoli have struggled to bridge the gap in renewal talks, with TMW expecting an agreement to remain difficult. The proposed asking price sits between €25m and €30m. That would represent a strong return on the player Napoli signed from Manchester United in 2024 for around €30m, although his accounting value has fallen to roughly €7.5m. McTominay’s performances explain why Napoli can still demand a substantial fee. He won the 2024/25 Serie A MVP award after scoring 12 league goals and providing four assists during the title-winning campaign. His timing around the box, physical presence and attacking runs made him a key figure. A return to England now looks increasingly plausible. Manchester United and Aston Villa reportedly made enquiries during the summer, while his Premier League experience would ease the transition. He has a connection at Villa Park, having played alongside captain John McGinn 63 times for Scotland. Would Aston Villa need Scott McTominay in 2027? FOXBOROUGH, MASSACHUSETTS – JUNE 19: Scott McTominay #4 of Scotland arrives at the stadium before the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group C match between Scotland and Morocco at Boston Stadium on June 19, 2026 in Foxborough, Massachusetts. (Photo by Buda Mendes/Getty Images) Villa’s midfield already contains Amadou Onana, Boubacar Kamara and Joao Gomes, with Lamare Bogarde, Leon Goretzka and Ross Barkley offering further options. Barkley is the only one whose contract is due to expire before McTominay could arrive. That makes the deal harder to justify from Unai Emery’s perspective. McTominay would add goals, aerial strength and late runs into the penalty area, but Villa already possesses players capable of controlling central spaces and covering defensive duties. His relationship with McGinn would offer an exciting bonus. The pair know each other’s movement from Scotland duty, and McTominay’s willingness to surge beyond midfield could complement Villa’s captain. Still, €25m-€30m is only part of the calculation. An €8m annual salary would place pressure on Villa’s wage structure if the club keep their midfield group. For me, Aston Villa should resist the temptation unless they create room first. If Goretzka or another senior midfielder leaves, the equation changes. Without that exit, spending heavily on another central midfielder looks difficult to defend, even for McTominay.
