West Ham Face 28-Year-Old Centre-Back Call: Should Nuno Start Him Against QPR?

West Ham Face 28-Year-Old Centre-Back Call: Should Nuno Start Him Against QPR? West Ham return to Championship action on Friday with QPR visiting London Stadium, but Nuno Espirito Santo faces one awkward selection call. The fixture starts at 8pm BST, and visitors arrive after selling out their allocation of 3,001 tickets. QPR currently sit sixth, two points behind the Hammers for now, adding plenty of edge to a London meeting that could reshape the promotion picture. Claret & Hugh reports that Mavropanos has spent the break far from rested. Greece played Serbia, Germany, the Netherlands and Germany again across the international period, while the West Ham defender featured in all four matches. He played 384 minutes, leaving 12 minutes on the bench, before completing 78 minutes in Sunday’s 0-0 draw with Germany. West Ham had previously confirmed his involvement in all four Nations League fixtures. That workload matters, yet the numbers make the decision less straightforward than simply leaving him out. Mavropanos has scored four Championship goals in seven appearances and logged 609 minutes in the league. He has started every Championship match he has played, while his goals against Wolves , Bolton, Wrexham and Millwall have given Nuno an attacking outlet from centre-back. There is another issue. Max Kilman can partner a replacement, but Golambeckis remains the obvious young option if Nuno wants to protect Mavropanos. The 18-year-old has completed Championship matches against Watford and started the 4-1 Carabao Cup win at Southampton, giving him senior experience rather than a purely theoretical promotion from the academy. West Ham have not played a Championship match since the 2-2 draw at Millwall on September 19, while QPR last played on September 9 because of the extended international schedule. That gap gives Nuno time to assess Mavropanos in training before making his call. Should West Ham start Mavropanos against QPR? LONDON, ENGLAND – SEPTEMBER 11: Konstantinos Mavropanos of West Ham United celebrates scoring his team’s third goal during the Sky Bet Championship 2026/27 match between West Ham United and Wrexham at London Stadium on September 11, 2026 in London, England. (Photo by Justin Setterfield/Getty Images) Start him, but don’t ask for 90 minutes unless his Thursday training strongly supports it. QPR represent a direct promotion rival, and West Ham need their best defensive organisation in a fixture with plenty at stake. Mavropanos has shown his value this season, particularly with four goals, so removing him completely could create a needless risk. Still, Nuno should protect the 28-year-old once the match situation allows. If West Ham establish control, Kilman can take over late. Golambeckis should then receive a planned start in a less demanding fixture rather than being thrown into Friday’s pressure game. That approach gives West Ham the experience they need now without ignoring the physical cost of a punishing international schedule.
