Barclays WSL2 results: Newcastle stay top, Bristol City send the Saints marching, Leicester lose again This weekend of WSL2 action saw Newcastle United continue to impress with a 3-0 win away at Durham, who remain the only side without a point. Meanwhile, Bristol City and Nottingham Forest got back to winning ways against Southampton and Burnley respectively. Ipswich Town kept pace near the top of the table after producing a winning display against a resolute Sheffield United. Sunderland stay second in the league table after convincingly beating Leicester City. Wolverhampton Wanderers and Watford shared the spoils in a 2-2 draw. Here’s how the latest batch of WSL2 results unfolded. Durham punished by high-flying Newcastle A Tyneside Derby occasion that saw Durham, placed rock-bottom, face Newcastle United, who sit top of the WSL2 table. It didn’t take long for Newcastle to take the lead. A Jordan Nobbs corner caused chaos in the box as Hildur Antonsdóttir tapped in from close range to put the Magpies 1-0 up. In the second half, Newcastle showed their quality. Nobbs followed in on a loose saved shot to fire in a brilliant volley and make it 2-0. Martha Thomas put the match beyond doubt, scoring her fifth goal of the WSL2 season. A Beth Lumsden cross meant Thomas couldn’t miss a tap-in from a yard out to make it 3-0. Ellie Brazil turned provider and set up teammate Freya Jupp to calmly strike beyond Fran Bentley to make it 0-1. Bristol City came out of the half-time break with a rocket up them and were soon back in the match, equalising through Lotta Lindström. Emily Syme saw her shot parried by goalkeeper Grace Maloney, and Lotta Lindström fired the rebound low into the net to make it 1-1. Sophie Ingle then stepped up to show her quality. The Bristol City defender found in the six-yard area by a brilliant Esther Morgan cross. She took a perfect first touch and struck low into the corner to make it 2-1. Forest dig deep to secure three points Nottingham Forest went ahead, and it again involved Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah. The Forest forward combined with teammate Tuva Espas, scoring her first goal since June, to make it 1-0. In a match in which Burnley didn’t get a shot on target, they offered very little threat of getting back into the match. Forest commanded possession with 64 percent and secured all three points when Tuva Espas bagged her brace. The forward pounced on a loose save from Burnley keeper Jackie Burns to tap in and win the match 2-0. Ipswich Town put Sheffield United to the sword The Blades hosted Ipswich at a sunny Bramall Lane at the weekend. Just before half-time, Ipswich Town forward Princess Ademiluyi made space and got a shot off out of nothing that stung the palms of Sian Rogers. It took until the 58th minute for Ipswich to come to life in the shape of Megan Hornby, who found herself in space 30 yards out and hit a rocket to make it 1-0. Princess Ademiluyi then rivalled her teammate for strike of the match. The Ipswich striker sent an un-saveable shot into the net from the edge of the area to make it 2-0. Sheffield United got themselves a goal back through some skilful footwork by substitute Connie Schofield who danced through the Ipswich Town backline to shoot into the bottom corner and pull one back. Despite Sheffield United pushing them to the final whistle, the match finished 2-1. Sunderland outfox Leicester City for all three points Sunderland took an early lead in the 10th minute. A poor pass from Leicester City goalkeeper Katie Keane found Katie Kitching unmarked, who expertly lobbed the goalkeeper from 30 yards out. Leicester then capitalised on some poor defending themselves. Missy Goodwin sent a wicked corner in, the ball pinged around a busy penalty area, and Asmita Ale chipped it into the far corner to make it 1-1. Elise Hughes then got her fourth WSL2 goal of the season after Katy Watson delivered a strong low cross for Hughes to convert from close range. Kitching is having a blistering season so far and turned provider as she crossed for Finnish international Sanni Franssi to convert with a crisp drive beyond Katie Keane. The match finished 3-1 with Sunderland securing second place in the WSL2 league table. Old Gold and Golden Girls share points in exciting draw Wolverhampton Wanderers hosted Watford for the first time since both teams were newly promoted to the WSL2 this season. Wolves struck gold first with a powerful headed goal from Georgia Marshall to make it 1-0. The second half saw Watford respond with a quick-fire double to turn the match on its head. A free-kick delivered in saw Poppy Wilson take a touch and brilliantly finish to make it 1-1. Phoebe Poole then turned a looping header beyond the diving Wolves keeper to make it 1-2. In the 75th minute, the referee spotted a handball, awarding Wolves a penalty. Charlotte Greengrass coolly slotted it beyond Safia Middleton-Patel to make it 2-2. Vera Jones couldn’t recreate her previous free-kick heroics as she fired onto the crossbar in the last minute. WSL2 action resumes on 25 October after the international break. Watford host rock-bottom Durham. Resurgent Nottingham Forest welcome league leaders Newcastle United. Bristol City will be hoping to get back on track at home against Wolves. Burnley host Sheffield United. Sunderland travel to Ipswich Town. Leicester City return to the King Power Stadium for the visit of Southampton.
