Andoni Iraola must change Liverpool star's position, he has no choice
Andoni Iraola must change Liverpool star's position, he has no choice Andoni Iraola is in a difficult spot. He'll need to change one Liverpool star's position - there's little choice in the matter. is injured and it's created a major problem for Andoni Iraola. Not that anyone is entirely clear on the full extent of Jacquet's problem just yet. The defender was left out of France's final fixture, coming on Monday evening against Belgium. Fabrice Hawkins reports it's a hamstring problem and one that isn't severe, but enough to leave Jacquet on the sidelines. Liverpool are unlikely to take any major chances with the 21-year-old as a result. They can't afford any sort of injury that leaves him out for a month or two - not with squad depth as low as it is. The Reds are already working Joe Gomez and Giovanni Leoni back from injuries. The last thing they need is another lengthy absence. And that's why it feels as though Iraola's hand is forced this weekend. Ronald Araujo needs to change Ronald Araujo has been a fantastic right-back for Liverpool over the first part of this season. We're not entirely convinced that he was signed to do that, but the Reds have found balance with the extra defensive solidity he provides. However, we think he might need to move into centre-back against Manchester City. Jacquet's hamstring problem isn't one Liverpool should take a chance with, and there really isn't another serious option at the back to partner Virgil van Dijk. Jeremie Frimpong can then move to right-back and while that's not the setup anyone wants, we think it makes the most long-term sense here. Araujo can take a week or two at centre-back, just to make sure that Jacquet is back to full fitness. The worst-case scenario here, after all, is that Jacquet is rushed in too soon, aggravates the hamstring problem, and Liverpool are without him for months. That would have a devastating effect on the season. So making use of Araujo's versatility just makes the most sense. It's the sensible option, even if it weakens Liverpool against City - we're just not sure they can afford to take any other chance.
