Man City icon David Silva comes out of retirement as he announces shock move
Former Manchester City playmaker David Silva is returning to football after ending his retirement to play in the Hong Kong Premier League . The ex-Spain midfielder, 40, has signed for newly-promoted Supreme Sha Tin, reportedly on a short-term deal. Silva won the World Cup with Spain in 2010 and also lifted the European Championship trophy on two occasions in 2008 and 2012. He earned 125 caps for his country, scoring 35 goals. His 10 seasons with City brought four Premier League titles and two FA Cups. He left the club in the summer of 2020 to join Real Sociedad. An anterior cruciate ligament injury suffered during 2023 led Silva to announce his retirement, but he is now set to return to action in Hong Kong. “I am very happy to join Supreme Sha Tin for this experience,” Silva said in a video message on the club's social media channels. Silva was part of a hugely successful Manchester City side (Reuters) “I am really looking forward to going to Hong Kong to enjoy the culture, the people and the food in Sha Tin and the football in Hong Kong. I can’t wait to go, so I look forward to seeing you all soon.” Sha Tin are currently eighth in the league after four matches, and will be back in action against Hong Kong Football Club on 18 October. "David Silva will be in Hong Kong soon to settle in, link up with squad training, and build up to peak match fitness before making his pitch debut," Sha Tin confirmed. Silva is best remembered by Premier League fans for playing in a dominant City side alongside the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and Fernandinho in midfield. However, it was announced last Tuesday that City had been found guilty of breaching the Premier League’s financial rules. The club has denied any wrongdoing, and confirmed it had lodged an appeal against the verdict last Friday. City are due to resume their Premier League campaign against Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday afternoon. Enzo Maresca’s team are currently three points clear of Arsenal at the top of the table after winning all five of their league games prior to the international break.
