Rangers Could Land £2m-Rated 23-Year-Old Centre-Back: Pay Now Or Wait For Free?

Rangers Could Land £2m-Rated 23-Year-Old Centre-Back: Pay Now Or Wait For Free? Rangers have revived their interest in Excelsior centre-back Casper Widell, with a January deal now looking possible at a fee below £2m. The 23-year-old came close to joining the Glasgow club in the summer, yet the move collapsed after Rangers failed to shift a defender. That has left the door open, and Pete O’Rourke of Football Insider now reports that Excelsior could accept less than the £2m price they wanted earlier. Widell remains contracted until June 2027, so Rangers could wait and agree a free transfer from January onwards. However, that option carries its own risk because other clubs can negotiate a pre-contract with him once the window opens. Widell has built a strong record since joining Excelsior from Helsingborg in 2023. He started all 34 Eredivisie matches last season, while his 2026-27 campaign has already brought seven league appearances and a goal. He is tall and offers the size that Rangers may value at both ends of the pitch. Why Casper Widell could make sense for Rangers McInnes has added Ben Godfrey on loan from Atalanta, while Olwethu Makhanya arrived permanently during the summer. Even so, Godfrey’s temporary deal means Rangers still need to think beyond the current campaign. Widell’s profile gives McInnes another right-footed centre-back with experience in a senior European league. He can defend his box, compete in the air and handle regular league football, although moving from the Eredivisie to Ibrox would bring a sizeable jump in expectation. The summer saga matters here, too. Widell recently explained that Rangers remained interested despite the failed move, while reports indicate he would consider another approach. That gives the club a clear route back into negotiations. Should Rangers pay £2m for Widell in January? (Photo by Ian MacNicol/Getty Images) For me, Rangers shouldn’t pay the full £2m simply to secure a player five months earlier than necessary. The contract situation gives McInnes considerable leverage, and a pre-contract could bring Widell to Ibrox without a transfer fee. There is one obvious exception. If injuries or departures leave Rangers short at centre-back, paying around £1m could make practical sense. That matters most if McInnes expects immediate European competition. Five months of competition, training and adaptation might then justify the outlay. Otherwise, patience looks smarter. Rangers can negotiate with Widell from January, protect their budget and avoid paying close to the £2m Excelsior wanted in the summer. If another club moves first, though, that calculation changes quickly.
