Raul Asencio talks Ancelotti, injury and recent controversy: ‘I fully accept the consequences’ At a time when Real Madrid’s defensive crisis appeared unsolvable, Raul Asencio emerged from the academy and provided a reliable and solid solution to the first-team dynamics. A few seasons have passed since then, but the player’s importance has entered a downward spiral with little, if any, sign of encouragement. Having already seen limited minutes in the last campaign, the player’s prominence took a further hit this season with Jose Mourinho considering him to be saleable and not a part of his plans. He eventually stayed, but has suddenly required surgery just when his chances were about to begin. Asensio speaks on his injury Asencio has undergone surgery. The pain kept getting worse. “ “I was suffering, but I couldn’t stop because the team came first. I always put this club and this badge above everything else,” he added, speaking of his dedication. Playing through the pain ultimately had its consequences, and they were very harsh on the player’s continuity and place in the team. “But there came a point when the fracture had grown, and I realized I had to undergo surgery.” The defender also opened up about Carlo Ancelotti with great words of praise for the current Selecao manager. “Carlo Ancelotti? An excellent person. To me, he was much more than just a coach.” Asencio spoke highly of Ancelotti. On his drinking controversy Earlier this year, the academy graduate came under immense scrutiny and criticism after he was convicted of drunk driving, especially given how he has been linked with negative charges and news even in the past. Speaking on the same, Asencio said, “It was a very tough time. Several situations in my life converged within a short period.” “Mourinho wasn’t wrong; he was absolutely right. Ultimately, people form opinions based on what comes out and what they see,” he added, backing Mourinho’s view on the incident. The player then admitted publicly to having made a mistake and begged for forgiveness. “I made a mistake. I admitted it then and I admit it now. I’ve apologised and will continue to do so.” “I’m a 23-year-old guy, and I’ve made mistakes, the kind anyone might make at that age. But I have to be aware of where I am,” he added. Asencio also acknowledged that playing for Real Madrid commands some basic requirements as a person, and that he would ensure not to cross lines in the future. “I’m at Real Madrid, and this cannot happen again. I fully accept the consequences, and my only focus is turning this situation around.” “I’m the one who’s hurting the most. I dream of turning things around and winning trophies with this club and this jersey, hopefully for the rest of my career. That’s why situations like this won’t happen again,” he concluded.
