Ligue 1 clubs want a swift end for Ligue 1 Plus
Ligue 1 clubs want a swift end for Ligue 1 Plus Ligue 1 clubs are keen for a swift end for Ligue 1 Plus, the league-owned broadcaster of France’s top-flight, as per a report from L’Équipe . Ligue 1 Plus was created following DAZN’s decision to terminate their agreement to broadcast Ligue 1 just one year into their five year deal. Last season was the first broadcast by the LFP-run broadcaster. It is now into its second season. However, despite its editorial success, receipts for clubs are minimal. It is the largest contributor to the current financial crisis that has gripped French football. As a result, clubs want a route out of the storm and it is being led by the new Director General of LFP Media, Olivier Bramly. He took the reigns earlier this year, and whilst is predecessor, Nicolas De Tavernost, spoke of letting the current deal with Ligue 1 Plus run its course – all the way until 2029 – a bidding process is expected to begin in November, with the rights deal beginning from the 2027/28 season. L’Équipe understands that there is greater optimisim of attracting more lucrative offers due to a change in legislation that will allow the rights to be sold in one single bundle. Bramly has already sounded out potential bidders such as Canal Plus, RMC Sport, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video… This is good news for Ligue 1 clubs, the majority of which, L’Équipe understands, want a swift end to the status quo and to Ligue 1 Plus. Some clubs have already expressed concern publically about Ligue 1 Plus, with Lille OSC president Olivier Létang. “We expect more money to flow for clubs. Like my colleagues, I am worried about that,” said Létang. It is a situation that could coming to an end, but only if offers are forthcoming at next month’s expected auction. GFFN | Luke Entwistle
