ENGLAND SQUAD: Toone handed late call-up as Bronze withdraws
ENGLAND SQUAD: Toone handed late call-up as Bronze withdraws Manchester United midfielder Ella Toone has received a late call-up to the England squad. WSL Full-Time were informed of the news via an official media release from The Football Association this morning. The 27-year-old has been drafted into Sarina Wiegman’s squad following the withdrawal of defender Lucy Bronze through injury. Bronze sustained a minor knock whilst playing for Chelsea last weekend. Toone was one of the surprise absentees from England head coach Wiegman’s initial 23-player squad. The Lionesses boss indicated that the midfielder had been left out due to the strength of competition, but gave her full backing to the player. Wiegman challenged Toone to come back stronger and she will now get an opportunity to impress again after swiftly being recalled into the squad. England face Greece in back-to-back matches in the current international window. The two-legged tie forms a round one play-off for FIFA Women’s World Cup Brazil 2027 qualification. The winners will advance to a second round play-off against either Slovakia or Ukraine. The play-off winners will secure a place in the tournament finals. The Lionesses have travelled to Crete ahead of the first leg tomorrow evening. England will then play host to Greece at The King Power Stadium in Leicester in the second leg on Tuesday night.
