Five nations, two games, one goal for Carlisle's Obiero
It was a case of shrugging off jetlag and on with the job for Micah Obiero in a busy week that took in international football and the National League. On Thursday, he played the first half of Kenya's 1-0 loss away to Guinea in an Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualification match. Travelling to the game in Conakry had involved taking in four different countries in transit. But from the west African country, it was a flight back to London before meeting up with his Carlisle United team-mates for their match at Aldershot Town on Saturday. And less than 48 hours after that game in Guinea, Obiero emerged from the substitutes' bench to score a stoppage-time goal to seal a 3-1 win for the Cumbrians. Obiero had played in Kenya's 1-1 draw at home to Eritrea in Nairobi on 26 September before his crazy week of travel really kicked in. To get to the match in Guinea, he and the rest of the squad set off late on Monday night. They went via Ethiopia and Ivory Coast before arriving close to 24 hours later. There was training on the Wednesday, the match the following day and with little time to recover, Obiero was soon on a plane to England where he arrived around lunchtime on Friday. But, keeping in contact with Carlisle head coach Rob Elliot, it was agreed he would still meet up with his team the following day at Aldershot, where he produced his cameo off the bench. "Friday, I was just sleeping," the forward told BBC Radio Cumbria. "I recovered then. "But I was still a bit tired and fatigued the following day, so the gaffer said I'd get about 20 minutes. So I just did what I can do in those 20 minutes and I got a goal, so happy days!" Obiero's younger brother, Zech, who plays for League Two side Tranmere Rovers, is also part of the Harambee Stars - who are managed by ex-Blackburn Rovers and South Africa striker Benni McCarthy - while their father Henry is a former Kenya international. "It's an honour to play in front of your people," he said. "My family went over there to watch so it was a really good feeling. "It's surreal. If you had asked me a couple of years ago, I would not have imagined it. Having that with my brother, it's something I'm really proud of to share the pitch with him."
