Sky Sports Reporter: Liverpool could yet make dramatic £59m transfer decision Liverpool Transfer News: Jarell Quansah Return Could Be Back on the Agenda Liverpool could have a decision to make over Jarell Quansah in 2027, with fresh reporting suggesting the defender’s future at Bayer Leverkusen is already attracting significant attention. Quansah left Liverpool shortly after their 2024/25 Premier League title triumph, joining Bayer Leverkusen in a £35m deal after making only four starts during Arne Slot’s title winning campaign. Liverpool did, however, retain a buyback option, meaning a return to Anfield remains a realistic possibility. According to Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg , movement around Quansah is already beginning to develop ahead of next summer. Florian Plettenberg reveals Quansah transfer interest Plettenberg reported on Wednesday that Quansah could leave Leverkusen in summer 2027, with several major clubs monitoring his situation. He posted: ‘Jarell Quansah could leave Bayer 04 Leverkusen in summer 2027. Movement already happening behind the scenes. ‘Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal are interested. Real Madrid are regularly scouting him. Liverpool still have a buyback option: €70m [£59.3m] valid until June 15, 2027.’ That is a significant update given Liverpool’s existing contractual position. The £59.3m figure would represent a sizeable investment, particularly considering the club sold Quansah for £35m only two years earlier. Photo: IMAGO Liverpool defensive plans could change There are obvious reasons why Liverpool might reconsider their position. Virgil van Dijk’s future could become an important factor, while Joe Gomez could also depart. If both experienced defenders were unavailable beyond next summer, Liverpool would suddenly need to address a potentially significant gap in the centre of defence. Quansah’s development at Leverkusen could therefore be particularly relevant. Regular football in Germany has given the England international an opportunity to develop away from the pressure of competing for minutes at Anfield. Liverpool’s current head coach Andoni Iraola will also have his own assessment of the squad and the profile of defender he wants. That could influence whether the club ultimately decide to activate their option. £59.3m buyback makes Liverpool decision complicated There had previously been little indication that Liverpool were preparing to bring Quansah back. That position could change if circumstances around the squad develop over the coming months. His contract at Leverkusen runs until 2030, so Liverpool cannot assume that activating their option will automatically make the transfer straightforward. Chelsea, Arsenal and Real Madrid are reportedly watching too, potentially creating competition for his signature. The key question is whether Liverpool believe Quansah has developed sufficiently to justify paying substantially more to bring back a player they previously sold. That decision will ultimately depend on his performances, Liverpool’s defensive requirements and Iraola’s assessment of the position. For now, Plettenberg’s report does not mean Quansah is returning to Anfield. It does, however, suggest that a move which previously appeared unlikely should no longer be dismissed. Our View Liverpool supporters would be right to approach this report with a degree of uncertainty. On one hand, Quansah returning could make plenty of sense. He knows the club, understands the demands of playing for Liverpool and has now gained valuable experience in the Bundesliga. If he continues to establish himself as a top level defender, the buyback clause could become an attractive option. The financial side is harder to ignore. Paying £59.3m to bring back a player Liverpool sold for £35m would require strong justification. Liverpool would need to be convinced that Quansah has developed into a defender capable of making a substantial contribution immediately. There is also the question of competition. If Chelsea, Arsenal and Real Madrid are genuinely interested, Liverpool may have to act decisively rather than waiting for the situation to develop. For supporters, the most encouraging part of Plettenberg’s update is probably the suggestion that Liverpool remain interested. It keeps the door open. Whether they ultimately walk through it is another matter entirely. A lot can change before June 2027, and Quansah’s form, Liverpool’s defensive needs and Iraola’s judgement will all be crucial.
