UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham denies playing down the severity of Man City charges as clubs fear political pressure United Kingdom Prime Minister Andy Burnham has rejected the notion that he played down the seriousness of Manchester City’s financial rule breaches. His initial response to the news of City being found guilty of 114/115 financial charges sparked concern among Premier League clubs. Now, Burnham has insisted that the findings against City must be treated with the utmost seriousness. The 56-year-old stressed that the club’s football-related case should be kept separate from the wider investment made by its Abu Dhabi-backed ownership. “I haven’t downplayed the seriousness of the findings,” Burnham told the BBC . He also said, “Football issues must be separated from wider investment” in Man City’s appeal. His clarification comes after several senior club figures reportedly expressed concern over comments the prime minister made earlier. Burnham had said he would be ‘ really concerned ‘ if City’s owners decided to sell the club. He then praised their contribution to Manchester and the investment that helped transform the Etihad and surrounding area. Those remarks left some clubs astonished, and they raised concerns that political pressure could influence the appeal process. A separate independent appeal board will hear City’s appeal against the guilty verdict. City continue to deny wrongdoing after an independent commission found them guilty of breaching Premier League financial rules following a 42-day hearing in 2024. Burnham, who served as mayor of Greater Manchester for nine years before becoming prime minister, has long championed Gulf investment in the region. However, he has now urged everyone to allow the football process to run its course. Downing Street has also insisted that nobody is above the rules and that any wrongdoing must carry the appropriate consequences. With City’s appeal still pending and a sanctions hearing yet to take place, Burnham’s latest intervention is unlikely to end the political debate surrounding the case. Burnham has been making the rounds in the football community after recently calling for alcohol to return to football stands .
