‘We absolutely want to dominate the game’ – England boss Wiegman previews Greece tie

‘We absolutely want to dominate the game’ – England boss Wiegman previews Greece tie England head coach Sarina Wiegman says that she wants her side to dominate against Greece when the two nations meet on Friday evening. The Lionesses have travelled to Crete ahead of the first leg of their round one play-off tie in FIFA Women’s World Cup Brazil 2027 qualifying. When speaking in the pre-match press conference, Wiegman said that the focus is on winning the game and dominating. “Of course, that’s the main goal [to win] then we bring it back to what we have to do tomorrow,” Wiegman said. “We are fully-focused on how we want to play tomorrow, what to expect from Greece. We’ve never played them before, they’ve done well in their campaign too. “It’s about being game plan ready, being the best we can be and then we absolutely want to dominate the game and win.” England are likely to face an opponent who will be aiming to stay in the tie for as long as possible. Wiegman highlighted the need for the Lionesses to balance trying to open up spaces with being patient. She said “It’s very important [to be patient]. We want to dominate the game, so yes, we have to move the ball very quickly. We want to play very dynamically, but we also have to be patient. When you have the ball and you’re quick, you hope that the opponent has to run a lot and you create spaces. “We are going to try and do that tomorrow and be really tight on the ball, wait until we get the chance to go forward and score goals.” England’s FIFA Women’s World Cup Brazil 2027 qualification round one play-off tie against Greece kicks-off at 5.30pm on Friday evening.
