Julian Nagelsmann back on RB Leipzig radar amid Martin Demichelis’ inconsistent start

Julian Nagelsmann back on RB Leipzig radar amid Martin Demichelis’ inconsistent start Julian Nagelsmann has reportedly returned to the thinking of some RB Leipzig decision-makers as pressure begins to build on head coach Martín Demichelis. Sky Austria reports that Nagelsmann remains highly regarded within the wider Red Bull organization and is viewed by some officials as a potential option should the Bundesliga outfit eventually decide to make another coaching change. There are currently no talks between the two parties. Demichelis also continues to retain the backing of club bosses. That support nevertheless comes with an important qualification. The Argentine’s work is now under close observation following an inconsistent opening to the season. Leipzig have won three and lost three of their first six competitive fixtures. Comfortable victories over Gladbach and Hamburg have been offset by damaging defeats in Bremen, Como and Leverkusen. As Get German Football News examined in our recent RB Leipzig Bundesliga Tactics Check , Demichelis has already struggled to establish the consistency demanded by a squad built for Champions League football. October now shapes up as a significant month. Klopp departure changes Demichelis’ position Demichelis’ situation is also complicated by a major change above him. Jürgen Klopp was among the most influential figures behind Leipzig’s summer reset. The former Red Bull Global Sports Director supported a move toward more aggressive, intensive football after Ole Werner’s comparatively pragmatic approach had returned Leipzig to the Champions League. Werner nevertheless lost his job. Demichelis arrived with an expectation that Leipzig would more closely embody the Red Bull footballing identity Klopp and the global sporting operation wanted. Klopp is no longer there to oversee the project. Roger Schmidt officially replaced him as Red Bull’s Global Sports Director on October 1st and, according to Sky , is presently urging calm internally. Schmidt reportedly wants time to study Demichelis, his methods and his ideas before arriving at a firm assessment. That amounts to continued breathing room for the Bundesliga’s first Argentine trainer. It also means one of the principal figures behind his appointment and sporting mandate is no longer part of Leipzig’s decision-making structure. Mintzlaff remains important Nagelsmann supporter Oliver Mintzlaff could prove equally important should Leipzig’s position change. The former RB Leipzig chief executive now serves as chairman of the club’s supervisory board in addition to his wider executive responsibilities with Red Bull. According to Sky , Mintzlaff remains an admirer of Nagelsmann. The relationship stretches back to Nagelsmann’s first Leipzig spell between 2019 and 2021. The 39-year-old led RB to a Champions League semi-final and Bundesliga runner-up finish while averaging 1.94 points across 95 matches. Mintzlaff was also heavily involved when Leipzig eventually sanctioned Nagelsmann’s move to Bayern Munich in 2021 for a record coaching compensation package. Nagelsmann’s standing within the Red Bull structure has apparently survived that departure. He is currently without a club after leaving his post as Germany coach following this summer’s disappointing World Cup campaign. Sky also reports interest from the Premier League, with Nagelsmann himself aware that his name is again being discussed in Leipzig. In terms of his next career move, one could envision Nagelsmann opting to return to the club at which he was once considered to be Germany’s next great head coaching talent. For the moment, Schmidt is preaching patience. Mintzlaff’s continued admiration for Nagelsmann nevertheless ensures that one familiar alternative remains visible in the background.
