However, now, according to Dutch outlet Voetbal (h/t Mundo Deportivo ), AZ and Smit are now close to reaching an agreement to extend his contract until the middle of 2030. AZ have long regarded Smit as one of the best talents to emerge from their academy. He joined the club’s youth system at just nine years old and has continued to develop into one of the most highly regarded young players in the Netherlands. He has also become a full Netherlands international after being handed his debut by former Barcelona head coach Ronald Koeman, who even compared the youngster with the Catalans superstar Pedri . Smit has never hidden his admiration for Barcelona Smit’s admiration for Barcelona is well established. In April, after AZ’s squad visited Barcelona to celebrate winning the Dutch Cup, the midfielder joked in an interview: “If they ask me to negotiate here, I am totally willing to do it.
