Espart’s rapid rise continues The renewal rewards Espart’s excellent start to the season and confirms the speed of his development. The youngster began training regularly with Hansi Flick’s first team at the start of 2026 and gradually earned a greater role. That progress culminated in his Champions League debut against Newcastle United. The 19-year-old starlet’s rise continued through the pre-season in the summer and soon enough, Espart was given full first-team status and assigned the No.12 shirt. He has established himself at left-back despite being right-footed, but he can also perform reliably at right-back and in midfield. Midfield is the youngster’s natural position and the role he occupied for much of his career, including when he won the European U-19 Championship with Spain during the summer. His ability to operate in several positions gives Flick a range of solutions within the squad. With the renewal, Barcelona have once again underlined their commitment to young talent and the academy, securing both the present and future of one of the most promising emerging players in the squad.
