West Ham £12.8m Midfielder Frozen Out At 28: Can Nuno Justify His January Stance? West Ham face a January decision over Edson Álvarez, whose club situation has spilt into his Mexico career. Sport Witness reports that the midfielder may struggle to regain his place with El Tri after a documentary request during the 2026 World Cup reportedly irritated figures inside the federation. West Ham and Edson Álvarez face January decision Álvarez, 28, returned to London after Fenerbahçe chose against making his loan permanent. West Ham then entered the Championship with the Mexican outside Nuno Espírito Santo’s plans. He played 75 minutes in the 3-1 Carabao Cup win over Portsmouth on August 8. After that appearance, Nuno left him out of 10 successive matchday squads, according to Sport Witness. Reports in Mexico claimed Álvarez did not want to remain in the second tier, while West Ham remained open to selling him. That stance produced a transfer twist. Olympiacos reportedly offered €10 million plus €5 million in add-ons, but West Ham rejected the package before later attempting to revive the deal. By then, the Greek club had moved on. The episode left the Hammers with a midfielder they wanted to move and a market that had closed. Can Nuno justify freezing out Edson Álvarez at West Ham? MEXICO CITY, MEXICO – JULY 05: Erik Lira #6 and Edson Alvarez #4 of Mexico react after the 2-3 loss during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 match between Mexico and England at Mexico City Stadium on July 05, 2026 in Mexico City, Mexico. (Photo by Richard Pelham/Getty Images) There is a football argument for Nuno’s decision. West Ham need players who accept the Championship project and provide immediate value, particularly after relegation created pressure for a swift return. Álvarez’s contract runs until June 2028, so leaving him outside the squad protects Nuno’s standards, but it does little to increase his transfer value. Financially, that matters. A player who barely plays becomes harder to sell, while his wages continue to count against the club. West Ham could gain more by restoring Álvarez to the squad if he accepts the manager’s demands and proves useful. Mexico’s position adds another factor. Rafael Márquez omitted him from his first September-October squad, citing his lack of club minutes alongside wider concerns. Sport Witness says journalist Aldo Farías believes the documentary dispute has made another call-up harder. That does not mean Álvarez has lost his Mexico career for good. His 103 international caps give him considerable experience, and regular Championship football could change the conversation again quickly. For West Ham, the cleanest January outcome may be a sale near the reported €15 million valuation, provided a buyer appears. If no acceptable offer arrives, Nuno may have to decide whether keeping an experienced international frozen out makes more sense than using him.
