Leeds United Face £8.5m Defender Dilemma: £34m Star Or 29-Year-Old Centre-Back?
Leeds United Face £8.5m Defender Dilemma: £34m Star Or 29-Year-Old Centre-Back? Leeds United head to Arsenal with an unbeaten record intact, but Daniel Farke faces awkward decisions before the 12.30 pm kick-off. Five league games have produced nine points, leaving the visitors confident they can trouble the reigning champions. However, the international break has left Farke checking his options instead of simply picking his strongest side. The Leeds Press reports that Joe Rodon remains the clearest absence. The Wales centre-back suffered a hamstring injury against Brentford on August 30, with an eight-to-10-week lay-off. Mateo Joseph remains sidelined with a knee problem, while Jean-Matteo Bahoya needs assessment after an ankle injury with France Under-21s. Harry Wilson provides another headache. He missed the Crystal Palace draw with a thigh problem and withdrew from Wales duty. He could return, although Leeds must wait for a late decision. That uncertainty could affect the attacking shape, but Farke’s bigger call may come in defence. Rodon’s absence removes an experienced back-three option, with Nico Elvedi and Tarik Muharemovic competing for places. Elvedi has offered consistency since joining Leeds, so dropping him would carry a clear risk. Jaka Bijol, though, gives Farke a different option. The Slovenian international brings size, strength and Premier League experience, qualities that could matter against Arsenal. His international-break performance has strengthened his case. Arsenal may have Kai Havertz unavailable, which could influence the matchup, yet Viktor Gyokeres still presents a major physical threat if he leads the attack. Bijol’s aerial ability could help Leeds deal with crosses, long passes and second balls in the box. Should Farke choose Bijol to handle Gyokeres? LEEDS, ENGLAND – SEPTEMBER 20: Quinten Timber of Crystal Palace is challenged by Tarik Muharemovic of Leeds United during the Premier League 2026/27 match between Leeds United and Crystal Palace FC at Elland Road on September 20, 2026 in Leeds, England. (Photo by Shaun Botterill/Getty Images) Bijol has a strong case. Elvedi has done little wrong, yet this match demands physical defending and concentration against quick passing. Muharemovic’s presence could make Bijol an even more useful partner because the pair offer a left-footed option alongside a more imposing central defender. Leeds have invested heavily in Muharemovic, so Farke will want to avoid exposing him repeatedly. Still, Elvedi’s reliability cannot disappear from the equation. Farke must choose the combination most likely to control the box under pressure. Wilson and Bahoya could yet return, but Rodon and Joseph remain unavailable. He arrives with confidence, but one selection problem will leave someone deserving on the bench. Arsenal’s own injuries may ease the pressure, yet Farke still needs the right balance at centre-back for this demanding away test against a dangerous striker like Gyokeres in north London.
