Everton Takeover Twist As Friedkin Eyes Exit: Can A New Owner Fix The Club’s Transfer Problems?
Everton Takeover Twist As Friedkin Eyes Exit: Can A New Owner Fix The Club’s Transfer Problems? Everton’s search for new owners could already involve potential buyers, although completing a takeover may take up to six months, according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider . The Friedkin Group (TFG) has officially opened the door to a sale, leaving fans surprised by the prospect of another ownership change so soon after its arrival at Goodison Park’s successor, Hill Dickinson Stadium. TFG completed its takeover in December 2024, acquiring approximately 98.8% of Everton. Therefore, the decision to explore a sale comes less than two years into its ownership, following a frustrating summer transfer window and discussions about securing additional investment. Everton takeover talks could already be underway Speaking to Football Insider, Borson suggested that conversations with a potential investor could have started before TFG decided to consider selling its entire stake. He explained that ownership deals typically take three to six months from beginning to completion, depending on the circumstances. However, an investor who initially considered purchasing a minority stake could now explore buying control of the club instead. “There is somebody that they’re already talking to that’s been looking, maybe at taking a minority?” Borson said, outlining one possible scenario. He added that the size of the financial commitment remains significant, although existing discussions could give Everton a better chance of completing a sale sooner. Everton have appointed Moelis & Company to advise on the process, with TFG exploring investment options that include selling a controlling interest. That wording leaves room for different deal structures, rather than guaranteeing that the American group will sell every share it owns. Amanda Staveley has emerged in speculation about potential successors, but no confirmed agreement establishes her as Everton’s next owner. Could Everton complete a takeover before the January window? Borson’s timeline suggests that Everton could complete a transaction within six months, although several financial and regulatory hurdles could delay proceedings. A prospective buyer will examine the club’s finances, outstanding debt, stadium commitments and room for spending under the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR). Any proposed change of control must also satisfy the league’s owners’ and directors’ test. TFG has stated that it will continue providing full financial support while exploring its options, reducing the immediate prospect of a forced sale. Can Everton avoid another prolonged ownership saga? (Photo by Lewis Storey/Getty Images) Everton need clarity before the January transfer window, particularly after David Moyes worked with a squad that required further strengthening during the summer. A takeover could bring fresh funds for recruitment, but uncertainty over ownership might complicate contract negotiations and transfer planning. Buyers will need to demonstrate that they can support the club financially while maintaining progress at Hill Dickinson Stadium. A spring 2027 completion looks plausible if negotiations advance smoothly, although no confirmed timetable guarantees that outcome. For Everton, securing a financially capable owner matters more than completing a deal before January.
