Cox helps Exeter get rare away win

The 22-year-old netted the only goal as Exeter won 1-0 at Shrewsbury Town on Saturday to earn a first away victory since 24 January, when they beat Port Vale 3-1 at Vale Park. It was Exeter's first point on the road since April and Cox's first goal since a 4-1 win over Blackpool on 9 August 2025. Cox has been suffering from allergic reactions , one of which caused him to be withdrawn from the starting line-up in Tuesday's Jersey Mike's Trophy game with Oxford United late on. "It's been really frustrating - the game on Tuesday, I was meant to get some good minutes in and unfortunately I had another allergic reaction," Cox, who has made just two starts all season, told BBC Radio Devon. "But hopefully we've got to the bottom of that now and they stay away for the foreseeable future. "They have been scary moments for me but now I'm back and hopefully we've passed it and I can push on from now." Exeter City investigate Cox's mystery illness Shrewsbury Town 0-1 Exeter City Cox came off the bench at Shrewsbury and finished well with his left foot after Exeter broke from an 8th-minute corner they had been defending. The goal came eight minutes after Cox, who has risen through Exeter's academy and made his debut as a 16-year-old in 2021, had come on. "For Sonny to get that goal when we were defending our box from a corner kick... He's marking his man in the six-yard box and the team broke with such positivity and belief that we could go up the pitch and score," said Exeter City manager Matt Taylor. He added when Sonny, who he said has "been to hell and back the last couple of months", took the goal "time almost stood still in that moment". Listen to Exeter City content on BBC Sounds
