Celtic Boss Rejects Free Agent Transfer Move: Should They Go For Him In January? Martin O’Neill has played down speculation linking Celtic with former France international Tiémoué Bakayoko, insisting the Scottish champions won’t pursue an immediate deal for the free agent. Reports on Friday suggested Celtic had considered signing the 32-year-old after observers spotted him in Glasgow during the international break. However, O’Neill dismissed the latest rumours and indicated the club would assess their options again in January. “They say he’s been down here for the last couple of weeks; I haven’t seen him. We won’t be taking on anybody at this minute,” O’Neill said . “If we’re still in and around the scene by January time, then we can have a look.” The comments leave little room for an immediate transfer, although Celtic could revisit the situation if their circumstances change during the first half of the season. Why has Bakayoko attracted Celtic transfer rumours? Bakayoko has been without a club since leaving Greek side PAOK in July 2025, following spells with several major European clubs. The midfielder previously represented Chelsea, AC Milan and Napoli, while his career highlights include winning Ligue 1 with Monaco in 2017 and claiming the Serie A title during his time with Milan. His physical presence and experience in European competitions could appeal to Celtic, particularly if O’Neill needs additional options in midfield during the second half of the campaign. However, the lack of recent competitive football raises a significant question about his readiness for Scottish Premiership demands. Reports have placed his last competitive appearance in November 2024, leaving a substantial gap in his playing record. Celtic must therefore consider his fitness, match sharpness and ability to contribute immediately before committing to any contract. O’Neill has returned as Celtic’s permanent manager for the 2026/27 season after guiding the club to the Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup double in 2025/26. His current deal runs for one year, with an option for another season. With the squad already competing for honours, the manager has little reason to rush into an addition without clear evidence that the player can improve his options. Celtic return to action on Sunday, 11 October, against Motherwell at Fir Park, with kick-off scheduled for 12 pm. Should Celtic gamble on the 32-year-old in January? (Photo by Chris Ricco/Getty Images) Celtic could consider a short-term contract if Bakayoko proves his fitness and demonstrates that he can handle competitive football again. His experience at Monaco, Chelsea and Milan offers a credible case for consideration, especially if injuries weaken O’Neill’s midfield options. However, signing a player who has reportedly gone nearly two years without competitive action poses obvious risks. Celtic need reliable performers during a title defence, not a high-profile name who requires months to regain full sharpness. A low-cost agreement with appearance-related incentives could limit the financial risk, but only after thorough fitness assessments and convincing training performances. Until then, O’Neill’s position makes sense: Celtic can revisit the possibility in January without committing to a deal now.
