Thibaut Courtois set to sign new contract with Real Madrid

Thibaut Courtois set to sign new contract with Real Madrid Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois is set to sign a new contract, keeping him at Santiago Bernabeu until the summer of 2028, The Athletic reports. The Belgium international’s current deal expires at the end of the season, but both parties have agreed in principle on a new contract covering the 2027/28 season . Courtois joined Madrid from Chelsea in the summer of 2018 and is now in his ninth season with the club. During his time in Spain, the 34-year-old has won 13 trophies, including three La Liga titles and two Champions League crowns. He’s considered one of the best goalkeepers in world football, recording 98 clean sheets in La Liga. Despite approaching the twilight of his career, Madrid believe he still has the quality and hunger to perform at the highest level for a couple more years. Courtois suffered a serious anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in 2023, but he returned and picked up where he left off, without dropping in quality or ability. The Belgian shot-stopper is also highly regarded at the club’s Valdebebas training ground for his work ethic, commitment and professional attitude. He’s one of the team leaders and has avoided the issues that have affected others. His decision to take a break from international duty also reflects his desire to stay in top form for Madrid. Having made 115 appearances for Belgium, he has agreed with national team coach Mark van Bommel to sit out the upcoming Nations League campaign. Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens has been selected in his place. Courtois is still Madrid’s first-choice goalkeeper in La Liga and the Champions League, while deputy Andriy Lunin has often been given opportunities in domestic competitions. Madrid have been monitoring potential replacements as part of their long-term planning, but they’re in no rush as Courtois is still performing at the highest level. Los Blancos are trailing arch-rivals Barcelona by six points in La Liga and are set to visit AS Roma for their second Champions League fixture on Wednesday evening.
