Liverpool vs Man City: Police make 10 arrests after Anfield clash as officer suffers serious injury
Liverpool vs Man City: Police make 10 arrests after Anfield clash as officer suffers serious injury Merseyside Police have confirmed 10 arrests following Sunday’s Premier League meeting between Liverpool and Manchester City at Anfield. According to The Athletic , one police officer suffered a serious facial injury while on duty. The officer was injured on Anfield Road around 6.35pm as supporters from both clubs left the ground after City’s 3-0 win . The injured officer was taken to hospital for treatment and is now recovering at home. Merseyside Police said officers arrested people on suspicion of several offences. One man was arrested on suspicion of two counts of assaulting a police officer, while five others were taken into custody for allegedly tragedy chanting. Another person was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly and assault, two were arrested for affray, and one was detained for allegedly throwing objects onto the pitch. Chief Inspector Leanne Hobin said officers were stationed outside Anfield to help supporters travel safely and reduce disruption on nearby roads. “Officers were on duty outside the ground to smoothly facilitate the movements of those travelling to and from the game, as well as minimise any disruption on the roads outside,” she said. “The officers and stewards are there to protect the public and keep them safe, and it is extremely disappointing that an officer has sustained a serious injury while carrying out that duty. “Enquiries into the full circumstances are ongoing so that anyone responsible for criminality can be brought to justice.” Five male supporters were arrested before and during the match over alleged tragedy chanting. The Hillsborough disaster in 1989 led to the deaths of 97 Liverpool supporters, and the tragedy is still a deeply painful part of the club’s history. Football authorities and supporters have repeatedly condemned chants mocking the victims. Hobins reiterated that the loss of life should never be used to score points against rival fans. “The tragic loss of life should never be a subject for tribal point scoring,” Hobin added. “Football fans who chant about tragedies cause huge distress to the loved ones of people who died, and their behaviour has absolutely no place in football. “We will continue to work with clubs to take action to identify any perpetrators and bring them to justice.”
