PLAYER RATINGS | Lens 0-2 Sporting: Les Sang et Or come unstuck in Yannick Cahuzac’s first Champions League game Matchday 2, UEFA Champions League, 13/10/2026 Lens came into the match boasting an unbeaten start to life back in the UEFA Champions League albeit after one match. However, this wouldn’t last as Sporting secured a 2-0 victory at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis. The Lisbon outfit secured three points thanks to goals from Luis Suárez and Issa Doumbia. The match: Yannick Cahuzac’s start to life in management has been a baptism of fire with his third match in professional management coming in Europe’s premier competition. Les Sang et Or started the brightest of the two teams. Udol and Ivanović were both presented with opportunities to test Pereira early on, but neither could connect with their efforts. Thauvin forced the debutant stopper into his first professional save and he didn’t cover himself in glory as he failed to gather a routine effort from distance at the first time of asking, causing the Frenchman’s eyes to light up, only for him to gather the ball at the second time of asking. The Lens captain flashed a dangerous delivery across the Sporting 6-yard box to find Ivanović in space. However, he couldn’t react quick enough and the Ligue 1 club were forced to settle for a corner. After a positive start from the hosts, the visitors began to settle into the game and control the tempo of the match. This foothold on the match was rewarded with the game’s opening goal. Irankuda managed to find space on the left flank in behind Abdulhamid and Suarez was quickest to react in the box before turning the ball beyond Risser who managed to get a hand to the ball but couldn’t stop it from finding the back of the net. Lens found themselves caught out from a long ball in behind to find Suárez yet again, Risser was able to stand tall and produce a magnificent save to keep the French side in the match. The former Marseille forward was proving to be a handful for Lens and should have scored his second goal of the evening. Ivanović went agonisingly close to levelling proceedings from distance, the Croatian’s shot produced all kinds of movement after he let fly only to be denied by the post. Catamo had the last big chance of the game as his effort whistled beyond Risser and past the post from a tight angle. Sporting led at the break. The hosts found themselves on the backfoot once again after the break with Antonio forced into a vital block to deny Catamo from finding the net. Lens had more chances on goal, but failed to create any major openings after 50 minutes as most of their efforts were from distance. Lens tested Pereira once again from distance, this time through Haidara. The midfielder’s effort was turned over the crossbar. Seconds later, as Sporting launched a counter attack, Simões was presented with a great opportunity but his effort was straight at Risser. In search of a goal, Cahuzac called upon Odsonne Édouard from the bench. The former Crystal Palace forward almost had an instant impact as he showed good feet to get his shot away in a crowded penalty area but his shot let him down and presented an easy gathering for Pereira. Abdulhamid continued to be a threat on the right flank and played a dangerous delivery into the area which evaded the French forward. Lens began to look more dangerous with his presence in their forward line. Doumbia put the result beyond doubt with 15 minutes to go. Andersen played a superb ball in behind to set the midfielder one-on-one with Risser and he made no mistake to double Sporting’s lead. Lens continued to search for a route back into the match with Thauvin firing from distance yet again to no avail. Lens player ratings: Robin Risser – 4 Ismaëlo Ganiou – 5 Samson Baidoo – 4 Kyllian Antonio – 5 Saud Abdulhamid – 5 The Saudi Arabian defender proved to be a threat going forwards but often found himself out of position from a defensive perspective. He played numerous dangerous balls into the box, yet offered Irankunda far too much space and this proved to be costly as the Australian set up the first goal. Michaël Cuisance – 4 Amadou Haidara – 5 Matthieu Udol – 4 Florian Thauvin – 5 Involved in most of Lens’ positive phases of play, the captain was unable to have a decisive influence on the match. He created chances and had chances of his own but the 33-year-old came unstuck as his team huffed and puffed in search of an equaliser. Despite his troubles, he still remained one of the most dangerous players on the pitch and found promising positions. Franjo Ivanović – 4 Junior Kadile – 5 GFFN | Liam Wraith
