Liverpool could trigger Premier League bombshell after massive Arsenal mistake

Liverpool could trigger Premier League bombshell after massive Arsenal mistake Arsenal are making a massive mistake. Now Liverpool have a chance to trigger a true Premier League bombshell. Liverpool need to revamp their midfield. Or at least, they need to restructure it because the current setup simply isn't working. That leaves Andoni Iraola with a couple of choices. He could move to a three-man midfield, much as Jürgen Klopp ultimately did after taking over at Liverpool, or he could sign a defensive midfielder to sit in the midfield two. Really, we think the Reds will pick the latter. It seems the club are all-in on sticking with a 4-2-3-1 system, having failed to try anything else since Klopp left. So a flat midfield two it is, and that means signing someone. Which brings us back to the original idea. Martin Zubimendi is there to be signed Arsenal appear to have given up on Martin Zubimendi. The Spaniard joined them a little over a year ago now, having turned down a move to Liverpool in 2024. But despite playing a regular role in their title-winning campaign, Zubimendi can no longer get into the Arsenal team. He hasn't started any of their five Premier League fixtures this season and didn't even come off the bench against Leeds United this weekend. Now, we feel that's a massive mistake. Zubimendi was outstanding last season - for reasons we've detailed here - and Declan Rice being superior cast a huge shadow over him. A large enough shadow that many don't seem to realise just how good Zubimendi was. Though, we do see Arsenal's plan. They want more creativity and aggression through the middle, believing it can move them up a level from a team that was incredibly dependent on set-pieces and breakaways. The problem there is that an incredible defensive record won them the title last season. Zubimendi and Rice were, according to our Value Adder model, the chief reasons for that. Moving away from the double-defensive-pivot not only leaves more space for opponents to attack but it will also break the shield in front of their backline. We don't expect them to have close to the same defensive record this season and we've already seen Brighton take full advantage of the extra space. For Liverpool, though? We think Zubimendi can be a perfect fit alongside any of their current midfielders. That's the one bonus of having so many attacking midfield options - a new defensive signing should mix well with any of them. If Arsenal truly don't want him, then Liverpool can try to snap up one of the best defensive midfielders in Europe. Because at the end of the day, he's exactly the player they thought he'd be back in 2024.
