Liverpool enquiry for 'fantastic' midfielder confirmed
Liverpool enquiry for 'fantastic' midfielder confirmed Liverpool have been linked with a whole host of players ever since the 2026-27 season first kicked off. Most fans expected a complete rebuild of their first-team squad after their fifth-place finish last term and, while that has happened with certain areas of their squad, there are still some that require a lot of work doing to them. This has led to the rumour mill going into overdrive with many different questions asked about what the future holds for Andoni Iraola and his squad . Obviously, there are some sections of Liverpool's team that need upgrading more than others but, the fact that all these rumours are being shared in the first place is good news because, if the Reds want to get back to their best, they need to make some new additions. Liverpool made an enquiry for Marc Bernal in the summer One of the main areas of Liverpool's squad that needs upgrading is their midfield. At the moment, only Trey Nyoni and Alexis Mac Allister are available for Iraola to choose from in the Premier League as Ryan Gravenberch has managed to get suspended while Dominik Szoboszlai missed Sunday's clash through injury. And, while Nyoni and Mac Allister have performed well when called upon, the Reds still don't have enough cover or quality to get back to their best. This is obviously a major problem and one that Liverpool clearly saw coming. That is, if the latest update from Sport is to be believed. "In fact, Frenkie de Jong is now returning and Bernal won't have a place in the team, so we'll have to see what happens in January," they wrote. "Marc Bernal received a flood of offers after Rodri's arrival at Barça. Manchester United, Liverpool, City, and Chelsea all inquired about him. "Atlético Madrid also showed interest, as the academy graduate was of great interest to Simeone's team, and this could have opened a door in the Julián Álvarez deal, but it didn't materialize. "Neither Barça nor the player wanted to explore a transfer because Bernal could be a very valuable asset for the future. Therefore, Barça secured his services until 2031 in a very ambitious agreement." Marc Bernal is a transfer that makes a lot of sense for Liverpool Ever since Fabinho exited Anfield, they've never really managed to replace him. Mac Allister, Gravenberch and even Stefan Bajcetic have tried to fill the void left by the Brazilian but, each time, something just hasn't worked out. This has led to multiple number sixes being linked with Liverpool and, of the lot, it feels like Marc Bernal makes the most sense . The midfielder has earned plenty of experience in La Liga and the Champions League despite being just 19 years old. In fact, the youngster has even been dubbed a " fantastic " player due to his impressive performances. Barcelona may be trying to extend Bernal's contract to bump his price up but, with Rodri among their ranks and Frenkie de Jong almost back in action, it's clear that, if Bernal wants to play football regularly, he's going to have to make the jump and leave his boyhood club.
