Real Madrid manager Mourinho takes another swipe at Barcelona over Negreira case – “It’ll be the biggest scandal”
Real Madrid manager Mourinho takes another swipe at Barcelona over Negreira case – “It’ll be the biggest scandal” Jose Mourinho, who did not shy away from criticising the referees after Real Madrid’s narrow win over Villarreal, has now launched yet another attack on FC Barcelona. The Portuguese manager has been quite vocal about Barça and the Negreira case since rejoining Real Madrid earlier in the summer. This time, speaking from Italy ahead of his side’s Champions League meeting with Roma, he reached for a parallel with one of the sport’s most infamous episodes. Mourinho draws the Calciopoli comparison Talking to Prime Video Italia, Mourinho contrasted how Italian authorities dealt with the 2006 Calciopoli scandal with what he sees as a lack of consequences in Spain. Because it’s the only country where Calciopoli has truly been Calciopoli ,” he said (h/t MARCA ). “Because in Spain, what happened, and everyone knows what happened, and it still seems like… the air is still tense. So far, nothing has happened. Nothing at all ,” he added. Asked whether he expected the case to lead anywhere, the 63-year-old did not hold back. “If nothing comes of it, it’s perhaps the biggest refereeing corruption scandal in the world ,” he concluded. The reference was to Calciopoli, the match-fixing affair that saw Juventus relegated to Serie B and stripped of two Scudetti, with Milan, Lazio and Fiorentina also sanctioned. Barcelona unmoved by the noise The comments reinforce the stance long pushed by Real Madrid, who view the Negreira case through the same lens as a proven scandal. Barcelona remain unbothered about the Negreira case. (Photo by Angel Martinez/Getty Images) Barcelona, however, remain entirely unbothered . The club has consistently maintained that the €7.3 million paid between 2001 and 2018 to former CTA vice-president Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira was for refereeing and scouting reports, insisting no sporting crime took place and that no evidence suggests otherwise. Recent developments have only strengthened their position. A judge rejected Real Madrid’s request to extend the investigation by a further six months, and the Catalans dismissed the latest UEFA involvement as nothing but “smoke and mirrors.”
