Five things we learned from Galatasaray 1-4 Barcelona
Five things we learned from Galatasaray 1-4 Barcelona Barcelona produced a comeback win against Galatasaray, turning a difficult Champions League evening into a commanding 4-1 victory . Hansi Flick’s side struggled to impose themselves in the first half, with the Turkish hosts making full use of their home advantage and putting the visitors under considerable pressure. However, the game changed after the break . Barcelona found greater rhythm in attack, punished Galatasaray’s defensive vulnerabilities and finished the night with four goals. Apart from the scoreline, the match offered several important lessons, from Dani Olmo’s difficult outing to Lamine Yamal’s growing influence and Joao Cancelo’s ability to deliver when Barcelona need him most. Here are five things we learned from Barcelona’s 4-1 win against Galatasaray. Dani Olmo’s failed false-nine experiment Dani Olmo failed to influence the game. (Photo by David Ramos/Getty Images) Flick made an interesting selection decision by deploying Dani Olmo as a false nine and leaving Gabriel Jesus on the bench. Given the Spaniard’s recent form , there was hope that he could thrive in the role. Instead, the experiment exposed some of his limitations. Olmo showed intelligent movement and played a part in Cancelo’s equaliser, but his overall contribution was disappointing. He missed two excellent opportunities from Pedri’s through-balls early in the match and struggled to provide the cutting edge Barcelona needed in the final third. His technical quality is clear, particularly when operating between the lines and combining in tight spaces. However, Galatasaray’s aggressive approach and high defensive line created opportunities to attack the space behind their defence, making pace and clinical finishing especially important. With Jesus offering a more natural centre-forward option, Flick may need to reconsider his attacking setup for bigger European fixtures. Olmo was substituted around the hour mark, and the performance suggested that playing him as a striker is not always the best solution. Lamine continues to make the extraordinary look normal Lamine Yamal was unstoppable against Galatasaray. (Photo by Burak Kara/Getty Images) Lamine Yamal was once again the difference-maker for Barcelona. The teenager registered two assists, including a sensational piece of skill to create Anthony Gordon’s goal, and showed why he remains one of the most dangerous attacking players in European football. Although Yamal took time to settle into the contest, his influence grew as the match progressed. Once he found his rhythm, Galatasaray struggled to contain him, with Ismail Jakobs repeatedly forced to scramble across to deal with the winger’s movement and dribbling. Yamal also came close to scoring on several occasions, although he ultimately finished the match with two assists. At this stage, the remarkable has become routine for the young Spaniard. Barcelona can build attacks around him, trust him to create chances under pressure and expect him to change the course of a match even when the opposition initially manages to keep him quiet. Cancelo delivered when Barcelona needed him Cancelo’s goal was a breather for Barcelona. (Photo by Francisco Macia/Getty Images) Barcelona were in danger of reaching half-time in a difficult position, but Cancelo’s equaliser changed the mood of the contest. His goal arrived at a crucial moment, restoring parity and giving Flick’s team a platform from which to take control after the break. Cancelo’s attacking positioning was particularly impressive, allowing him to arrive in the right area and finish the move. More importantly, his overall performance challenged the concerns surrounding his defensive reliability. The Portuguese full-back completed the full 90 minutes, attempted two shots on target and created two key chances. Defensively, he recorded one tackle, four clearances and six recoveries, while winning two of his three aerial duels, showing a well-rounded display at both ends of the pitch. Cancelo has always possessed the technical quality to influence games in possession, but performances like this demonstrate why his contribution can be so valuable when Barcelona face difficult situations. Barcelona’s finishing a concern despite four goals Flick needs to work more on Barcelona’s finishing. (Photo by Burak Kara/Getty Images) A 4-1 victory might suggest a flawless attacking performance, but it is crucial to note that Barcelona wasted opportunities that could have made the evening considerably less complicated. The Catalans attempted 22 shots , with 12 finding the target. While those numbers demonstrate their ability to create chances, the first half featured several missed opportunities, particularly from Olmo and Gordon. Against Galatasaray, Barcelona had enough attacking quality to recover and turn those missed chances into a footnote. Against elite Champions League opposition, however, the same wastefulness could prove far more damaging. Flick’s side cannot rely on scoring four goals every time they struggle to convert their best opportunities. Improving their composure in front of goal would make Barcelona more efficient and reduce the risk of allowing opponents to remain in games they should be losing. Adeyemi deserves consideration, but timing matters Adeyemi was on the scoresheet against Galatasaray. (Photo by Burak Kara/Getty Images) Karim Adeyemi made an immediate impact after coming off the bench, scoring a fine half-volley and offering the pace and directness that can trouble tired defenders. The German’s explosive acceleration makes him particularly dangerous when opposition defences begin to lose their shape, and his latest contribution strengthens the case for giving him more opportunities. However, there is also a question of timing, as Gordon was growing into the game as the second half progressed, and Barcelona were beginning to find solutions against Galatasaray’s defensive setup. Hence, Adeyemi’s introduction may not have been as urgent as it appeared at first. Indeed, Adeyemi has shown that he can provide a different attacking threat, but the challenge now is to find the right moments to use that quality.
