Liverpool could save £70m as major U-turn mooted
Liverpool could save £70m as major U-turn mooted Liverpool's summer will be full of change but money is going to be an issue. The Reds spent over £400 million last summer on new players which is the most that the club has ever splashed. And, with them making such a big investment into the playing squad last term, most people expected them to have a quiet window this time around. But, after finishing in fifth place and only just scraping qualification to the Champions League, new signings are almost certainly needed. This is why so many players have already been linked with a switch before the window has even opened. But, for this to happen, they'll need to sell some players and save money wherever they can with a massive U-turn potentially saving the club £70 million. Inter Milan could be about to make a U-turn on their Curtis Jones pursuit Curtis Jones ' future has been up in the air for some time now. The Englishman was hardly chosen to play by Arne Slot and, when he did get used, it was often out of position. This made it seem like Slot didn't trust him which is a bit mental considering how poorly Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch performed this term. Jones' lack of game time led to him searching for an Anfield exit with Inter Milan the team most interested in signing him. And, even though he didn't get his move away in January, that doesn't mean the Serie A outfit lost interest as they chose to make another move at the end of the 2025-26 season. Since then, it's felt nailed on that the Englishman would exit but, now that Andoni Iraola is in charge , things have changed with Inter even having second thoughts about a deal. "Surveys, like the one conducted Tuesday with Udinese for Atta, suggest a possible Plan B in midfield should Jones not arrive," FC Inter 1908 wrote. "However, negotiations are tightening with the Friulians for Solet: Inter have offered €17 million plus bonuses, Udinese starting with €25 million, and at €20 million plus bonuses, the Frenchman will be confirmed, having already said yes." Liverpool keeping Curtis Jones would stop them buying at least one new midfielder Seeing as though Jones only has a year left on his current deal, Liverpool wouldn't really be able to earn all that much money from his sale. However, without selling him now and keeping hold of him for another season, they run the risk of losing him for nothing in June 2027, which, after Liverpool have already lost Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ibrahima Konate over the last couple of years, is something they can't afford to let happen. So, since Iraola is the new man in charge, the Spaniard will have to decide whether to keep him around or not. Because, if he chooses to keep hold of the Englishman, then there would be no need for t he Reds to splash around £70 million on Mateus Fernandes and enter a bidding war. This would be a massive chunk of change for Liverpool to save and would allow them to boost other areas of their team that need it more. Iraola will probably be hoping to see something in one or two of the Reds' players that Slot didn't so that he can focus on the areas which really matters.
