‘An exhibition’: Steven Gerrard salutes PSG after stunning first half against Man City
Steven Gerrard hailed “a 31-minute exhibition” from Paris Saint-Germain as the best football he had seen in years after the Champions League holders scored three first-half goals against Manchester City . Desire Doue, Ousmane Dembele and Vitinha struck for the visitors and Achraf Hakimi hit the post in a rampant 17-minute spell while former City manager Pep Guardiola watched on at the Etihad. Guardiola was making his first appearance at the Etihad since leaving the club in May, in what was City’s first home appearance since the were found guilty of breaching Premier League financial rules. But PSG became the first team to score three first-half goals against Manchester City away from home since Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool in November 2015 as Luis Enrique ’s back-to-back champions produced a statement performance. And former Liverpool captain Gerrard was stunned to see a City side who have won all six of their Premier League games this season and were 3-0 winners at Anfield on Sunday be so comprehensively outplayed. “It’s been a 31-minute exhibition, it’s been so one-sided,” Gerrard said on TNT Sports. “Outstanding. I think Enzo Maresca has to speak to his staff and change something. I think they’re a man down in the centre of the pitch with [Rayan] Cherki.”
