Barcelona’s new strategy to secure the futures of La Masia’s rising stars – report
Barcelona’s new strategy to secure the futures of La Masia’s rising stars – report FC Barcelona are continuing their efforts not only to attract talent from across Spain and abroad, but also to retain their most promising young players for the future. Relatively recent departures such as Marc Guiu and Pedro ‘Dro’ Fernandez raised concerns within the club’s sporting department, prompting changes to its approach in an attempt to prevent similar situations from happening again. As such, SPORT reports that Barcelona began introducing special clauses into contract renewals for players from the 2008 generation onwards. The initiative, driven by Alexanco, Deco and others, has remained in place for every contract extension completed since June and July 2024. As a result, all players from the 2008 generation who had not yet renewed their contracts for the youth team at that point have since signed deals incorporating the new clauses. Renegotiating contracts before players turn 18 The main innovation in Barcelona’s new renewal model is a release clause that increases as players achieve specific milestones. This was the amount that allowed Guiu to leave in the summer of 2024 and the base fee for Dro’s departure, although Barcelona negotiated an additional €2 million in compensation from PSG. Dro had already signed a renewal for the youth-team category by the time Guiu left. However, his contract did not yet include the new provisions governing release clauses. Under the revised system, the initial €6 million clause increases as players progress. It rises to €8 million when they make their debut in the UEFA Youth League and to €10 million when they are called up to the reserve team. The figure continues to increase, reaching €25 million once a player has made five appearances for the first team. Barcelona have also changed their approach to the timing of contract negotiations for players finishing their youth-team careers. Previously, discussions would generally begin during the final season of a player’s contract, although some exceptions were made. The club now aim to address renewals before players turn 18, since they can sign long-term contracts from that age. (Photo by David Ramos/Getty Images) Under this strategy, Barcelona are increasingly looking to secure the futures of players while they are still in their second year of youth-team football. Depending on the individual case, the club may offer a long-term contract lasting four or five years. Negotiations then take place with the player and their representatives to reach an agreement. However, not every player will necessarily want to commit to Barcelona for such a lengthy period without a clear understanding of their development pathway, their prospects of reaching the first team and the role the club envisages for them. The measures are designed to prevent promising players from leaving, particularly without a transfer fee, after Barça have invested years of coaching, development and resources in their progress. The next players who could come under this approach include Jordi Pesquer and Orian Goren. Both are regarded as important prospects by the club and will turn 18 in 2027. Barcelona’s objective is clear: protect their investment in La Masia and give themselves greater control over the futures of the academy’s emerging talents.
