UEFA draws up shortlist of potential candidates to challenge Infantino for FIFA presidency
UEFA draws up shortlist of potential candidates to challenge Infantino for FIFA presidency UEFA are still searching for a candidate to challenge Gianni Infantino in the FIFA presidential election. According to OJOGO , former Portugal international Luis Figo is among those under consideration, along with ex-Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger and London City Lionesses owner Michelle Kang. European football officials are exploring possible alternatives as they remain unhappy with Infantino’s leadership and his plans for another term as FIFA president. Infantino has confirmed that he intends to seek re-election for a fourth term . However, several senior figures within UEFA believe FIFA needs a credible challenger to push for greater transparency, accountability and reform. UEFA vice-president Laura McAllister has revealed that work is underway behind the scenes to find a candidate capable of attracting support from football leaders across different continents. McAllister also called for a candidate with a clear plan to reduce political interference in football and ensure that the FIFA president focuses on running the sport rather than pursuing other interests. Figo is a former Ballon d’Or winner who developed through Sporting CP’s youth system, and could bring plenty of experience and international recognition to the race. Wenger is also famous for his successful spell at Arsenal and his wider work in football development, while Kang offers a different perspective as the owner of London City Lionesses. Infantino has promised to address concerns about FIFA Forward Enterprise, a proposed initiative that would have allowed private investment in parts of FIFA’s operations. He has also announced an additional $15 million in funding for each of FIFA’s 211 member associations, increasing the total allocation for the 2027-2031 cycle to $25m per association. But that’s not enough to sway UEFA’s stance. Former Switzerland international Ramon Vega has also indicated that he intends to present a list of candidates. Vega, who played for Tottenham Hotspur and Celtic before moving into finance after retiring in 2004, could provide another option in the developing contest. FIFA presidential candidates must submit their applications by November 18, with the election scheduled for May 18, 2027.
