Rangers Face Premier League Interest In £3m Centre-Back: Should They Sell? Rangers have little reason to rush into selling their highly rated 22-year-old centre-back, Olwethu Makhanya, despite growing interest from clubs across Europe and the Premier League. According to Pete O’Rourke of Football Insider , Brentford and Sunderland sent scouts to watch the defender during Rangers’ reported 3-1 victory over Kilmarnock last weekend. Clubs in Italy and Spain have shown interest as well, suggesting his performances are attracting attention beyond Scottish football. However, Rangers remain in a strong negotiating position. The defender signed a contract running until 2030, with an additional option year reported in the manager’s comments. That agreement gives the Ibrox club considerable control over his future. Why Rangers should protect their investment The South African international arrived from Philadelphia Union in the summer for a reported £3 million. He has quickly established himself as an influential figure, offering physical strength and composure when building attacks from defence. His progress makes a sale difficult to justify at this stage. At 22, he still has considerable room to improve, particularly after moving from Major League Soccer to the demands of Scottish football. Before joining Philadelphia, he began his senior career at Stellenbosch. He subsequently made 42 league appearances for the American club before earning his South Africa debut in May. Rangers have invested in a defender who could improve significantly with regular football. Selling him after only a short spell would risk sacrificing that progress before the club receives the full benefit. Should Rangers accept a big offer or keep him? (Photo by Ian MacNicol/Getty Images) Rangers should keep him for another season unless an exceptional offer arrives and a suitable replacement becomes available. Brentford and Sunderland monitoring a young centre-back should encourage Rangers, rather than force their hand. Premier League interest can strengthen the club’s negotiating position, especially if more sides enter the race. However, Rangers must protect their wider recruitment plans. A substantial transfer fee could fund several squad improvements, but losing a dependable defender without securing a replacement could create an expensive problem. The sensible approach is to keep him playing regularly, help him adapt to Scottish football, and review offers only when they meet the club’s valuation. His own ambitions must matter, too. If he wants a move and a buyer offers the right fee, Rangers should consider the proposal carefully. For now, another strong campaign could increase his market value while giving Rangers greater stability at the back. A rushed sale would serve little purpose unless the money and replacement genuinely improve the squad.
