Chelsea Have Set Their Sights On This Barcelona Midfielder: Good Option For Alonso? In a recent report , journalist Pete O’Rourke stated that Chelsea have set their sights on Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong. It is believed that the Blues would have to pay £50m to land the Dutch talent next year. De Jong’s Impressive Form In La Liga Last Season De Jong enjoyed a good run of form at Barcelona in the previous campaign when he put in a series of influential displays for them in the middle of the park. The 29-year-old found the back of the net once and earned eight assists in 38 matches for the Catalan club last season across all fronts. The Dutch talent is currently among the most experienced central midfielders in the Premier League. Hence, it is no wonder that the Blues would do well to lure him to Stamford Bridge next year. His current contract at the Nou Camp will run out in the summer of 2029, which could make it tough for Chelsea to land him on a cut-price deal this winter or at the end of this campaign. De Jong is a good tackler of the ball and can scan the danger well to earn the ball back for his team inside his half. He usually puts his foot through the ball when the opposition are on the offensive and is a tidy passer as well from midfield. The Dutch sensation can even chip in by scoring and creating a handful of important goals for his team. De Jong is primarily a box-to-box midfielder but can also serve as a defensive midfielder if asked to do so. However, there are some question marks on whether he can make a smooth transition to life in the Premier League if the Blues manage to get a deal done for him next year. We can expect De Jong to add more quality and depth to Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso’s midfield department. He has what it takes to fight for a regular first-team spot at Stamford Bridge in the coming seasons. At 29, De Jong is still playing in his prime but is currently sidelined due to a serious knee injury. Still, he would be a good option for Chelsea in the short term.
