Ninja A-League preview: Western Sydney Wanderers undergo huge reset after back-to-back wooden spoons Our last stop in our 2026/27 Ninja A-League preview series takes us to the west of Sydney, where we find the back-to-back wooden spooners Western Sydney Wanderers. Manager: Geoff Abrahams Last season: 11th Finals: DNQ Another disappointing season last time out saw Western Sydney record consecutive last-placed finishes. That has led to a huge reset, with no fewer than 19 players leaving and 16 new arrivals. Club captain Amy Harrison is the most notable departure after 96 appearances across two spells. Another big name to leave is Danika Matos who has moved to Central Coast after seven seasons in Parramatta. Impressive young midfielder Amy Chessari will be a big loss following her move across the city to Sydney FC. Sham Khamis, Ella Buchanan, Cushla Rue and Olivia Price are among the other notable departures. Goalkeeper Sarah Langman joins from the Mariners and will add solidity to the back-line. Tiana Jaber and Tegan Bertolissio have arrived from Wellington and Canberra respectively. Norwegian youth international Silje Bjørneboe could prove to be a canny piece of business. The 26-year-old defender arrives on a year-long loan from Stabæk, where she’s made more than 200 appearances. Rhianna Pollicina and Sofia Sakalis have joined from Melbourne Victory. The midfield duo arrive with plenty of A-League experience under their belt. They will be complemented by the signing of Samantha Ireldale. The former German youth international has joined from Danish powerhouse Fortuna Hjørring. Goals were hard to come by last season. Talia Younis and Yuan Cong shared the mantle as top scorer with three each as the team scored just 18 times in 20 games. Following spells in her native Colombia, the US and Italy, Bahr has signed a one year deal. After a number of difficult seasons, the mark of success may be just avoiding a third straight wooden spoon. But if their experienced players can gel quickly, a push towards the chasing pack might not be out of the question.
