Barcelona make firm decision on the development of La Masia’s Ukrainian wonderkid
Barcelona make firm decision on the development of La Masia’s Ukrainian wonderkid La Masia has long been the backbone of Barcelona and continues to produce talented players for Hansi Flick’s first team. Barcelona have now established a clear development plan for Artem Rybak, one of La Masia’s most exciting young talents. The club is determined to prioritise his long-term progress over rapid promotion through the academy ranks. According to SPORT , the 16-year-old Ukrainian will spend the season primarily with Juvenil B under Cesc Bosch, while also being given a more settled role in midfield. Barcelona opt for patience with Rybak Rybak joined Barcelona’s academy after his family relocated from Ukraine following the outbreak of war. Previously part of Shakhtar Donetsk’s youth set-up, he is now entering his fifth season at the Catalan club. His performances have already attracted considerable attention within La Masia. Last season, he made eight appearances for Juvenil B while still playing predominantly at under-16 level. He subsequently impressed during pre-season with Juvenil A. The intention is to make Rybak an important player in Bosch’s team rather than have him alternate between age groups. A promotion to Juvenil A remains possible if injuries or squad changes create opportunities, but it is not currently the priority. A significant change in Rybak’s position Barcelona have also decided to develop Rybak primarily as an interior midfielder. The left-footed youngster has previously operated as a false nine, right winger and attacking midfielder, displaying impressive technical ability and creativity in several roles. However, the coaching staff believes his vision, dribbling and ability to link attacking moves can be maximised in midfield. The right decision for a special talent Barcelona’s approach is sensible, particularly given the growing tendency to judge academy prospects by how quickly they reach the senior team. Rybak does not turn 17 until April 2027, leaving plenty of time for his development. Regular playing time at this stage is more important than anything else. His versatility remains an advantage, but establishing a clear primary position should help him build consistency. La Masia’s greatest strength has never been simply producing talented footballers. It is developing players who understand what it means to play the Barça way. Rybak has the technical qualities to develop into an exciting first-team prospect. It remains to be seen how he progresses in the coming years and whether he can fulfil that potential.
