Real Madrid’s unlikely Champions League hero has a remarkable record of delivering when it matters most

Real Madrid’s unlikely Champions League hero has a remarkable record of delivering when it matters most Real Madrid have made a habit of staging sensational comebacks in matches where they look down and out, especially in the Champions League. One player who has become increasingly important in those moments is defender Antonio Rudiger. Primarily known for his defensive aggression and commanding presence, the German centre-back has also developed an extraordinary habit of scoring important goals for Los Blancos. According to Diario AS , Rudiger’s dramatic winner against Roma was his fourth Champions League goal for Madrid. Those strikes have directly earned the club five points and helped turn European encounters around. Rudiger delivers when Madrid need him most The German completed Madrid’s remarkable 4-3 comeback in Rome, scoring the decisive goal against his former club. His winner came during a breathtaking turnaround, with just seven minutes and 43 seconds separating Carlos Espi’s goal that made it 3-2 and Rudiger’s dramatic strike. In October 2022, Rudiger scored a stoppage-time equaliser against Shakhtar Donetsk, suffering a serious facial cut in the process. Two years later, his 83rd-minute header against Stuttgart put Madrid ahead before Endrick completed a 3-1 victory. He also scored against Borussia Dortmund during Madrid’s memorable 5-2 comeback in 2024, helping spark a turnaround inspired by Vinicius Junior’s hat-trick. Remarkably, Rudiger has scored four Champions League goals in just 43 appearances for Madrid, matching his tally from 117 La Liga matches. More than just a defender Rudiger’s contribution against Roma highlighted something particularly valuable about one of Madrid’s most experienced players. When the team’s attacking structure struggles, his physical presence offers another route to goal, especially from set pieces. Rudiger keeps finding ways to contribute for Real Madrid. He may no longer be the beast of a defender he was a few years ago, but the German keeps finding ways to contribute. One of Madrid’s best and most underrated signings in recent history, Rudiger may be getting on in age, but his importance has not waned. It remains to be seen how the former Germany international finds ways to contribute to Jose Mourinho’s team over the course of the campaign.
