Arsenal failed summer target still yet to play this season
Arsenal failed summer target still yet to play this season Arsenal summer target Jeremy Monga has made a very slow start to his loan to Swansea City, despite the team’s positive form so far this season. Photo via ManCity.com Arsenal made a serious push to sign Jeremy Monga from Leicester City over the summer, but when Leicester refused to budge on their asking price and Manchester City offered a lot more, he joined the Manchester club instead. Arsenal had offered £5m to sign the teenage winger, but City ended up agreeing a fee of £12.5m and a sell-on clause. That might not have seemed like a bad alternative option for Monga at the time, but things aren’t looking quite so positive for the youngster right now. The Championship side look like being one of the early favourites for Premier League promotion, which is just the environment you’d probably love to be in as a loanee. Fabrizio Romano reported in August that Swansea were approved by City and Enzo Maresca as the “ideal destination to develop”. Except that Monga still hasn’t spent a minute on the pitch for Swansea. More than that, he hasn’t even made the bench after eight games. Photo by Michael Regan/Getty Images Swansea City boss Vitor Matos this week admitted that whilst Monga is “available”, he simply hasn’t managed to convince the manager to include him in the squad. “At the moment we’ve a really competitive squad,” Matos said . “We need to make decisions regarding all the possibilities, to try to cover all scenarios on the bench as well, regarding how the game goes. So far Jeremy hasn’t made the squad, but let’s see.” The manager didn’t rule out the possibility that Monga could be recalled by City in January, saying they “don’t know” at this stage. Though he did add: “I think there’s still a lot of time.” Whether a return to City in January looks like an appealing option will likely depend on whether the club have been sanctioned for their 100+ guilty verdicts, and how severe those sanctions are.
