Javier Tebas launches fresh attack on Real Madrid and questions Spanish sports chief over apology demand
Javier Tebas launches fresh attack on Real Madrid and questions Spanish sports chief over apology demand Real Madrid and La Liga president Javier Tebas are embroiled in an ugly feud, with both sides exchanging sharp words in recent days. The controversy surrounding Tebas has taken another turn, with the La Liga president refusing to apologise for his comparison of Real Madrid TV’s communication methods with Nazi-era propaganda techniques. Tebas has publicly responded to Jose Manuel Rodriguez Uribes, president of the Higher Sports Council (CSD), after the latter described his remarks as unacceptable and called for an apology to Real Madrid. Tebas refuses to back down In a lengthy post on X , Tebas once again defended his comparison between Real Madrid TV’s communication methods and those associated with Joseph Goebbels, Nazi Germany’s propaganda minister. He maintained that his criticism concerned propaganda techniques rather than Nazi ideology or Real Madrid supporters. To support his argument, Tebas shared examples of journalists, editorial writers and politicians who had previously referenced Goebbels when discussing communication strategies. However, the La Liga president also appeared to question Uribes’ independence after the sports official publicly called for an apology. “What a coincidence that Mourinho and you bring up the apology, isn’t it? It must be ‘superior’ telepathy,” Tebas wrote. The response comes amid Real Madrid’s continuing demand for Tebas’ resignation over his original remarks. Tebas is making the situation worse Tebas is well within his rights to criticise Real Madrid TV’s coverage of refereeing and Spanish football institutions. However, his repeated attempts to justify such an inflammatory comparison are becoming increasingly difficult to defend. Tebas is in an all-out war with Real Madrid. (Photo by Gualter Fatia/Getty Images) There is an obvious difference between examining historical propaganda techniques in an academic discussion and invoking Goebbels during a public confrontation with a football club. Such remarks from the person responsible for overseeing Spanish league football demonstrate a profound lack of sensitivity. Rather than acknowledging why his words caused offence, Tebas has now turned his attention to questioning the motives of an official who requested an apology. This is the latest in a long list of issues Madrid have had with the La Liga president and the federation as a whole. An apology from Tebas would be the least Madrid deserve, but they are also right to push for his resignation. It remains to be seen how this saga develops in the coming days and how Los Blancos handle their ongoing confrontation with Javier Tebas.
