Barcelona chasing a record for the ages heading into the Real Madrid game
Barcelona chasing a record for the ages heading into the Real Madrid game Following their 5-2 win over Real Betis at La Cartuja on Saturday, Barcelona have now started the season with nine successive wins in La Liga. Hansi Flick has already beaten or at least equalled many records thanks to a blistering start to the season that has seen Barça win all of their 11 matches in all competitions. While all eyes are on the midweek clash against PSG, the record books will be keeping a close eye on the first El Clasico of the season against Real Madrid this coming weekend. With nine wins from their opening nine league games, Flick’s side have equalled the best start to a LaLiga season in history, a record held exclusively by Real Madrid since the 1968/69 campaign. Should Barcelona defeat Real Madrid at the Camp Nou, they will become the first team ever to win each of their first ten matches of a top-flight season, breaking a record that has stood for more than 50 years, and doing so against their eternal rivals. The incentive, as Flick’s record-breaking reign continues to grow, could scarcely be clearer. A record-breaking goal machine Can Flick’s men continue their winning form? Barcelona have scored 39 goals in those nine league games, an average of 4.33 per match, a figure that actually rises to 4.36 when their nine Champions League goals in two further outings are added. It is their most prolific start to a season in roughly a century, since 1926/27, when the club netted 47 in their first ten. This is no one-man show either. The goals have been shared among 13 different players, with Dani Olmo, Eric Garcia and Rodri all opening their accounts against Betis. For a side once criticised for lacking a recognised number nine after the exits of Lewandowski and Ferran Torres, that collective threat has become its deadliest weapon – a weapon that Barcelona would like to use again versus Madrid.
