Chelsea continue momentum with big victory over Spurs

Chelsea continue momentum with big victory over Spurs Chelsea made it five consecutive wins in the Barclays Women’s Super League with a 6-2 defeat of Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge this afternoon. Lauren James and Ellie Carpenter netted braces while Sjoeke Nüsken and Maika Hamano were also on target for The Blues in front of 7,814 fans at The Bridge Both sides looked to open the scoring in the early stages of the contest, but both Hannah Hampton and Lize Kop were left largely untroubled.  It was James who broke the deadlock in the 24th minute as her left-footed shot hit the bottom corner of Kop’s goal.  Spurs looked to respond, but Olivia Holdt’s effort from outside of the box was put high and wide following a corner.  The North Londoners did equalise in the 41st minute through a close-range header from Matilda Vinberg. It was the Swedish international’s first goal of the season.  Just before the break, former Chelsea player Drew Spence’s shot from outside of the box went wide as the visitors looked to build on their momentum. Before the hour mark, Carpenter put Chelsea back in front with a left-footed shot assisted by Alyssa Thompson, whose fast break opened up the chance. Following a triple substitution, James then netted another goal, with Lucy Bronze providing the assist.  Second-half substitute Nüsken scored the hosts’ fourth with a shot from the centre of the box before another Chelsea’s substitute, Hamano, netted the fifth after taking aim from outside of the box. Spurs got one back shortly after Hamano’s goal. Gaupset found the back of the net with a left-footed shot. In added time, Carpenter scored her second goal to cap-off a 6-2 victory for Sonia Bompastor’s side. She found the centre of the goal after an assist from Keira Walsh. Both sides return to Barclays Women’s Super League action next weekend with Spurs hosting Arsenal in the North London Derby on Saturday and Chelsea travelling to Crystal Palace on Sunday afternoon.
