Liverpool considering move to sign €90m-rated midfielder

Liverpool considering move to sign €90m-rated midfielder Liverpool Consider €90m Felix Nmecha Transfer as Alex Scott Alternative Liverpool are reportedly exploring a potential move for Borussia Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha as uncertainty surrounds their pursuit of Bournemouth’s Alex Scott ahead of the January transfer window. According to Mark Brus of Caught Offside , Liverpool and Chelsea are currently the leading admirers of Scott, with both clubs monitoring developments as the 23-year-old becomes increasingly likely to be available in January. However, Bournemouth’s substantial valuation has prompted Liverpool to assess other options, including Nmecha, who could be available for approximately €90m (£75.9m). Liverpool Face Major Alex Scott Transfer Obstacle Scott remains an attractive proposition for Liverpool as Andoni Iraola looks to strengthen his midfield options. Having previously worked with the England midfielder at Bournemouth, Iraola understands the qualities Scott could bring to his Liverpool squad. However, Caught Offside reports that Bournemouth are demanding more than £100m, with some sources suggesting a valuation approaching £110m to £115m. Liverpool’s recruitment department must therefore consider whether Scott’s potential justifies that expenditure, particularly when alternative targets are available at considerably lower valuations. Felix Nmecha Emerges as Liverpool Transfer Option Borussia Dortmund’s Felix Nmecha has emerged as one of those alternatives, with Liverpool reportedly maintaining a longstanding interest in the Germany international. The 26-year-old signed a new Dortmund contract earlier this year, although that development has apparently done little to discourage Liverpool’s recruitment staff. Caught Offside reports that Nmecha is viewed internally as an underrated player capable of making an immediate contribution under Iraola. One source told the publication: “Liverpool know Nmecha well and admire his qualities,” The source continued: “While I wouldn’t expect him to be a priority target, he’s someone they’d be ready to turn to if Alex Scott proves too expensive or chooses another option.” Photo: IMAGO That assessment provides an important indication of Liverpool’s current thinking. Nmecha appears to be a credible alternative rather than the club’s preferred midfield acquisition, with Scott seemingly occupying a more prominent position on their recruitment shortlist. Borussia Dortmund Could Demand €90m Any Liverpool approach for Nmecha would face complications. Sources close to Borussia Dortmund maintain that the midfielder is unavailable for transfer, although Caught Offside suggests an offer approaching €90m could potentially encourage negotiations. Nmecha has previously attracted interest from Manchester United and Chelsea, although neither club secured his signature during the summer. The midfielder also possesses experience of English football, having made three senior appearances for Manchester City between 2018 and 2021. Born in Germany, he represented England at youth level before subsequently committing his international future to Germany. Meanwhile, Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara remains another name under consideration at Anfield. The emergence of several candidates suggests Liverpool are preparing for different outcomes rather than allowing their January recruitment plans to depend entirely on Bournemouth’s willingness to negotiate. With Iraola continuing to shape his squad, the coming weeks could prove significant in determining which midfielder Liverpool ultimately prioritise. Our View There is something particularly intriguing about Liverpool’s reported interest in Felix Nmecha, especially when you consider the figures being discussed for Alex Scott. Scott is an excellent footballer, and his previous relationship with Iraola makes the attraction obvious. The Liverpool head coach knows precisely what he would be getting, which could make the Bournemouth midfielder an appealing option. However, £110m to £115m is an extraordinary amount of money for a midfielder who, talented as he undoubtedly is, still has plenty to prove at the highest level. Nmecha at approximately £76m would represent a significant saving, although that hardly qualifies as a bargain. At 26, the Dortmund midfielder is entering what should be his prime years. His physical presence, ability to carry possession through midfield and experience of Champions League football make him an interesting candidate. There is also the question of exactly what Iraola wants from his midfield. Liverpool already possess considerable technical quality through Florian Wirtz, Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai. Adding greater athleticism, defensive coverage and the ability to progress the ball under pressure could provide another dimension. My concern would be spending close to £80m on someone reportedly considered a secondary option. If Liverpool genuinely believe Nmecha is the right player, that is a different conversation. Recruitment decisions at this level should be driven by suitability rather than simply identifying a cheaper alternative. I would also be interested to know where Lamine Camara sits in these discussions, given his own considerable potential. Ultimately, Liverpool need to establish which midfielder best suits Iraola’s long-term plans before committing another substantial transfer fee. Scott might be the preferred choice, but at those prices, Liverpool are absolutely right to explore the market.
